My cat is pooping outside the litter box with bloody stool. Emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Hi. My 2 year old female domestic shorthair cat has recently (past 2 days) been defecating right next to litter box and today I noticed some blood in her stool. She is eating normally and seems like her usual self. She is pretty healthy, although a little overweight and has mild cat asthma. I am planning to bring her in to the vet as soon as I can but I was wondering if I should bring her to an emergency vet. Thank you.

While not an emergency I would recommend that you make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as they are available in order to get Pippa examined, particularly if this happens more than once. I would also recommend that you take a sample of the poop with you in case your veterinarian wants to analyze it prior to dispensing medications.
