Is pink vaginal discharge normal for my pregnant dog? Or emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Female | unspayed | 44 lbs

Our dog mated on 2/23/22. We observed signs of pregnancy like her belly is growing, her nipples enlarged, she is less active. My concern is that she have been with a moderate amount of daily pink jelly/ mucus type vaginal discharge. The discharge is odorless, her temp is 100.9. She is alert and active when goes outside. But inside the house is sleeping or laying down a lot. Wondering if this is normal for some dogs or if this looks like a emergency. Thanks.

Hello. This is not a normal finding during a healthy pregnancy. If she mated on 2/23, she should be 4 weeks into the pregnancy. There should not be any discharge. It is important to determine if she is actually pregnant or if she was only experiencing a false pregnancy and the discharge is due to an infection in the uterus (pyometra). Zelda should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible because uterine infections can become quite serious. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach
