Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 63 lbs
Hello! My dog is 2 weeks post neutering and he has just started licking his incision. There are tiny blood spots on him that look wet, but aren’t really bleeding. I’m wondering if his licking has opened up his stitches and it’s worrying me where it been 2 weeks already. I want to make sure it’s ok and it will heal on it’s own or if we need to see a vet. Thank you!

Hello. This incision is still healing and you are seeing areas where the skin edges have not completely healed together. Even though it has been 2 weeks- this photo indicates that Tucker should still be wearing an E-collar or some other device that will prevent him from licking the area. It will heal but it will take longer and you are at risk of it getting infected or opening up more if he is continued to be allowed to lick the area. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Birmy! Even with the incision fully healed, he can cause damage with excessive licking. Start with a more gradual approach to weaning him off the cone. Start having it off only when he can be fully supervised. Then work up to leaving it off at night and when he is alone. He is probably just interested in the area since it is different and he hasn't been allowed access it. Look the area over and make sure a suture end from under the skin isn't poking through and irritating him. I hope this information helps!
