My dog's neuter incision looks good. Is it safe to remove the cone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 10 months and 24 days old | 65 lbs

My dog was neutered 9 days ago. His incision site looks good to me but I'm not sure how it's supposed to look when it's healed. Can I remove the cone at this point? (Attached photo from today - day 9)

Toffee’s incision is healing beautifully! I generally recommend keeping the e-collar on for 10-14 days after surgery. Even though his incision looks fantastic, it can be pretty itchy as the hair regrows. It would be a shame if Toffee licked a lot from this itchiness and delayed his healing progress. I would keep using the cone for a few more days out of an abundance of caution.

Yes, the incision looks almost fully healed. What I recommend is to take the cone off while you are home and make sure he isn’t licking the area. I would put it back on for a day or two when you’re gone just to make sure. When he leaves it alone then there will be no need to use it any longer.
