Why does my Chihuahua take so long to pee, only dripping urine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 4 lbs

When my Chihuahua urinates it literally takes him like 5-7 minutes because it only drips out. It has always been this way. He's not in any pain. It has only become a problem because we live in North Dakota. Why is it like this and can I do anything?

Even if Romeo has always been this way since he was tiny, as Dr. Strydom said, this is not a normal occurrence. It's possible that he may have a congenital issue, such as a narrow urethra or abnormally positioned/functioning ureters. It would be unusual for a dog Romeo's age (as well as when he was younger) to have prostate issues, but again, congenital issues are most likely. Without knowing why this is occurring, it's impossible to say what may help to improve this problem. At this point, your best bet is to take him to the vet for an exam and a urinalysis (just to rule out signs of infection - just to cover bases), some imaging. Your vet may recommend x-rays of his abdomen to check his bladder position and for the presence of stones, as well as an abdominal ultrasound to visualize his entire urinary system. I hope that everything goes well!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would consider this a pretty urgent problem. He needs to see a vet. The most likely causes for his symptoms would be a prostate problem or urinary stones. While urgent, I would not say it is an emergency. Just get him to your vet for an exam as soon as you can get an appointment.
