My dog has a mast cell tumor. Will she be in pain or get very sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 13 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

My baby has a mast cell tumor. It’s about golf ball sized and reddish/purple. I’ve had her my whole life and I’m panicking. What’s the chance she’s going to make it? Removal is next week, but my vet said it’s in a spot that most likely will not be able to remove it all. Will she be in pain? Will she get severely sick?

She will have some discomfort after the procedure but your veterinarian will send home pain medications to help manage her pain. She will not likely get severely sick but the most common side effects of sedation are vomiting and diarrhea. Lastly, you may ask your vet if referral to a surgeon is an option. Surgeons may be able to over procedures like skin graphs and flaps which may allow for a larger incision and this more likely to get the whole tumor.
