Why is my dog's poop soft and blobby but not loose? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

My Shih Tzu Romeo pooped this morning and it was small blobs but they were not hard or dry. Not loose either and is soft like play dough . Can that be a normal occurrence at times? He isn’t in any pain and appetite is great! Thanks

If he is otherwise acting normal then you can monitor for a couple days. He may have just ate something that caused some gastrointestinal upset. If it continues or he starts vomiting then he should be examined by a vet for treatment. You could feed a bland diet of chicken and white rice and also add a canine probiotic to his diet to see if that helps restore balance to his gastrointestinal tract.
