My dog has a red bump under her eye with discharge. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 17 lbs

I noticed my dog has this red, hard bump under her eye. There has been increased mucus in this eye lately (not a whole lot but more than usual). What could this be? Should I take her to our vet or just keep an eye on it? I haven’t seen it bothering her at all yet.

It looks like she has a meibomian gland cyst. As long as she isn't squinting and/or the eye is red/irritated then you can soak a washcloth in warm water and apply it over the eyelid several times a day and see if it resolves. Otherwise, she should be examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet might prescribe an antibiotic and/or corticosteroid to treat. Sometimes, surgery is needed, especially if the bump is rubbing against the cornea.
