My cat's chin is red and sore. How can I treat it before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat’s chin is looking red and sore. I’m not sure why. He does get allergies, but I’m not sure how that would cause this. I’ll be taking him in for a booster shot soon anyway, but is there anything I can do in the meantime to treat his chin?

I can certainly see the redness and hair loss on Sylvester's chin. This type of issue can occur due to chin acne, as well as allergies. If you aren't already using stainless steel or glass bowls, I'd start by switching to one of those materials, as well as taking care to wash the bowls daily. Materials like plastic and ceramic are more porous, which can harbor bacteria and exacerbate chin acne. You can also clean his chin with an antiseptic cleanser on a cotton ball, followed by thorough rinsing. Antiseptics like Hibiclens or betadine can be found in most drugstores. I'm also glad to hear that Sylvester is going to be checked out by his vet soon. They'll be able to thoroughly assess the area to determine if other diagnostics or medications are needed. I hope that everything goes well!
