My dog's spay incision opened 2 weeks post-op, is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 10 months and 19 days old | 58 lbs

My dog was spayed two weeks ago. Her incision opened a small amount today. Her vet is closed today. Is she OK or do we need to go see someone today?

My concern is that the skin part of the incision should have been fully healed within 7-10 days. If it is opening up now at 2 weeks after surgery, there could be something wrong. It also looks like there has been some blood-tinged discharge, which shouldn’t be occurring at this time. I would recommend taking her to a vet today to have a better exam.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. As long as the wound does not open any more, it should heal up. However, if you see that the gap is getting bigger or the wound is swollen or there is a discharge coming from the wound, you should take Mimi to your nearest vets right away. In that case, the wound most likely will need to be glued and Mini may need a course of antibiotics.

That depends on the size of the opening. You need to keep her from licking the wound. If it is only open a cm or less, you can wait until tomorrow morning and then take her back to your vet for a recheck. He may want to glue the opening. If it is bigger, then you should see a vet tonight.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision looks fine to me. Sometimes the skin will not come together exactly when we are closing it and there will be a bit of overlap. It doesn't look swollen or open to me. I don't think it is an emergency at all. Just get her checked out in the morning.
