Bloody diarrhea. a few drops of bright red blood after bowel movement. Would this be caused by a recent diet change: we switch to new food within the month. He was fine for the first 2 weeks on new food. Energy levels are normal. No vomiting.

Hi and thanks for your request regarding TIllman. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. Add a probiotic (like Pro-kolin for example) as this can help to speed up the recovery. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Changes in diet often causes bowel upset, especially if changed rapidly - it is best to introduce new diets over 5-7days. A probiotic fiber supplement such as fortiflora is recommended, your vet may also be able to provide symptomatic relief

If both dogs have bloody stool it is possible that the food change upset their stomach. However I would check for parasites too. Parasites are contagious between dogs and sometimes giardia is hard to detect. You can try an over the counter probiotic for a few days with the bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice. If not improving I recommend seeing a veterinarian for possible medications to resolve the issue.
