Kitten vomited worms. What kind and how to treat all my pets?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I am fostering a 5 months old kitten which I found on the street. Today, he vomited and I saw a kind of worm in his vomit. It seems like a tapeworm but I am not sure. What kind of worm is this? Can I deworm myself with a store dewormer or should I take him to vet? I also have an adult dog and cat at home. Do I have to deworm them too? Thank you.

It’s probably a type of roundworm. You can use a dewormer form the pet store but I would also schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure there aren’t any other intestinal parasites that the OTC dewormers won’t cover. I would also go ahead and deworm your other pets. All of them need to be re-treated in 3-4 weeks to completely rid the worms.
