My dog ate something unknown, threw up, breathing heavy. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 27 days old | 23 lbs

Hi. My dog is Akita Inu, female, 6 months old. We’re on a walk 6 hours ago and she chewed some peace of meat or something like that but I took it out of her mouth right after. Also, she ate a little bit more than usual today. Now she is breathing heavily and threw up something that smells exactly like her food, it’s not very liquidy. I’m very worried because the vets in my city open after 6 hours and I don’t know what to do. She felt asleep and I think she is feeling better after throwing up.

Poor Zoe! If she is sleeping, let her sleep and keep an eye on her for now. Should she start vomiting again, I would take her into an ER vet right away. Otherwise see how she is in the morning. If she eats normally, has no vomiting or diarrhea, isn’t lethargic, and shows no other concerning signs, she’s likely ok. Should she show any concerning signs in the morning like diarrhea, lethargy, or a loss of appetite, have her seen by her vet. I hope this helps!
