My senior cat ate peppermint oil. Is it toxic with kidney issues?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

My cat ingested a small amount of peppermint oil in a CBD tincture last night - a couple drops maximum. I didn't realize it until today. She's neither thrown up nor is exhibiting any signs of trouble, but she is a senior with stage 2 renal issues. If her organs are processing this, is there anything I can do to help, such as parsley oil as a chelator? Thank you.

Parsley oil will not help in this situation. Because Sophie has stage 2 renal issues and peppermint oil is toxic to cats, it's best to get her checked out by a vet asap. I'd recommend bloodwork and a urinalysis to check how her kidneys are functions. Please take her into a vet. Best of luck.

I poured peppermint oil all over the house to prevent insects from coming in not knowing how harmful it is to cats. My cat is showing no signs but I’m extremely worried because I can’t get the scent out of my house and I don’t know what her inhaling
The biggest problem with essential oils is not the smell, but when the oil gets onto the cat and they lick it off. This can happen when the oil is aerosolized or if it is sprayed or poured and the cat walks through it since they will then lick their paws. So, if you have sprayed or poured the peppermint oil in an area that Luna may walk through, then make sure you wash the area well. The strong smell is mainly a concern if a cat has asthma and is not associated with the toxicity aspect of essential oils. How long does it typically take for a cat to show signs/symptoms of poisoning? My cat may have eaten some peppermint oil about 30 hours ago now and she still seems perfectly fine.
Hello and welcome to PetCoach, I would have expected to see some clinical signs at this point so Morgan is very likely out of the woods. I would monitor for the next 24 hours for signs of trouble breathing, weakness, inappetance, vomiting, diarrhea and seizures or tremors, as these are all signs of Peppermint Toxicity, however she should have displayed signs by this point if it was going to become clinical. I use peppermint oil in my hair. I have two cats and I'm wondering if the smell of peppermint can be harmful to my cats?
If ingested, the peppermint plant and its oil could indeed potentially cause harm to your cat. Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and effects such as gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system depression and even liver damage could occur if ingested in significant quantities. Some peppermint oil formulations also contain aspirin derivatives, which could result in additional toxicity. Furthermore, if inhalation of the volatile oil were to occur, aspiration pneumonia may be possible. Based on this, we would not recommend using peppermint leaves or oil in areas where your cat is allowed access.

Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and if ingested, it can caused GI upset, central nervous system depression, and even liver damage if enough is ingested. I would not allow Kiki in your room at all at the moment, and to be safe, I would wash your bedding before allowing her back in. In the future, refrain from using peppermint oil.

Yes, I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. The mint may have really irritated her stomach lining. Yes. Remove the peppermint oil and clean any spots where it was applied. Peppermint essential oil can be toxic or harmful to cats. Consider an electronic pest repeller and seal any holes or cracks that would allow rodents to enter. Steel wool can be used to prevent them from chewing through.

I sprayed my box spring with peppermint oil and didn't think of my cats until after...will they be okay?
Unfortunately, peppermint does bother cats, and poses a significant health risk to them as well. They are very sensitive to it, and it can cause harmful effects to the GI system, central nervous system, and liver. I would not allow them to sleep on your bed until the smell of the oil is absorbed. I don't know if you can try to steam clean the box spring to get it out, but if you can, I would recommend doing that.

My cat just licked up a small drop of peppermint oil - about 15 minutes later he vomited, then came upstairs and ate all his breakfast. He’s acting totally normal- if he was poisoned would he be displaying symptoms already? This happened about 45 min
If he vomited and then ate afterwards and seems normal now then he should be fine. Cats are poisoned much less than dogs since they generally only taste bad things rather than eating a large amount. The best thing to do is rinse the eye as much as possible with artificial tears or saline eye wash. After that, if there is redness or swelling and she is not wanting to keep the eye open then take her to a vet tonight to see if it burned her cornea and created an ulcer.
