My dog has worsening skin bumps. Does he need a vet for infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 65 lbs

My dog is having a reaction to something. Noticed bumps under fur a few months ago. It has progressively gotten worse. I started an antibacterial bath today, instructions are for three day use. It some with lotion to apply daily as well. Just wondering if someone could tell me if vet care is necessary or if we’re on the right path? Possibly identify skin infection… it is basically on his whole body and I’m very worried. My other two dogs have normal skin and coats. I don’t believe they have it.

It looks like your dog has a pyoderma (bacterial skin infection). He should be examined and treated by your vet as he needs an oral antibiotic to help resolve the infection. He might also need a corticosteroid and/or other medications to treat. If he has a history of allergies, ask your vet about Apoquel or Cytopoint to help control his allergies. Most skin infections are secondary to allergies.
