Why is my outdoor cat limping suddenly with no visible injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 11 months and 27 days old | 5 lbs

1 year old cat, suddenly limping by morning, fine the night before, access to outdoors with neighboring punk cat(s) and country life. very little appetite today, lethargic, couldn't poop, tried several times. much better tonight, still resting and limping but plenty hungry. i don't see swelling or a wound at all, but haven't really gotten in there because he won't have it. with gentle poking, he reacts when close to the elbow.

Without a physical exam, it is near impossible to determine the cause of any discomfort. If there is no improvement, ideally, Manny should be seen by your veterinarian. It is possible he has a bite wound or other injury that could be the cause of his woes. It is very difficult to spot a puncture wound under all that fur, plus cat bites tend to seal up quickly which makes spotting them more difficult. Keep him indoors for the next several days and nights. Make sure he continues to eat and drink. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian in the morning.
