My cat has a painful lump. Is it an abscess? Does he need an ER vet?

Does this look like an abscess on my cat and do I need to get him to a vet asap. All the vets in my area are at least 2 weeks out.

In the picture, I think I can see muscles. That looks really severe and it could be from an abscess or injury. Milo does need to see a vet immediately, I would take him into an ER vet now. I hope this helps!

You are correct. This sounds like an abscess. He will need oral antibiotics and sometimes surgery to open the abscess in order for this to heal. It is not something you will be able to treat at home. I suggest you get him to the vet for treatment. Best wishes.

Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks very suspicious for an abscess (localized area of infection). The puncture wound may have been the entry point for bacteria to enter. I would recommend getting Angel to the vet within the next 1-2 days. They can take a sample of the fluid to confirm the nature of the mass, and start antibiotic therapy if it is an abscess. In the meantime, I would ensure Angel does not scratch the area, by putting a scarf or e-collar (cone) on (it is difficult to say which would be best, as I can't tell the exact location of the lump in the photo). You can also try to disinfect the area by gently wiping with a dilute solution of betadine and water (1:10). I hope this helps, and that Angel feels better soon.

Yes, that appears to be an abscess. What you are smelling is infection. Chances are it won't clear up without oral antibiotics. I suggest you get him to the vet for an exam and to get some antibiotics. You can try applying a topical antibiotic cream/ointment but it is rare for that to actually work on it's own. As a side note, male cats that are not neutered usually get into a lot of fights so if you don't use him as a breeding animal you may want to have him neutered to minimize the chance of this happening again.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern! Judging from the picture, it looks as though there is a puncture in the center of the lump. I suspect this to be an abscess from some sort of penetrating injury (bite, scratch, etc.). I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If this is an abscess, it will likely need to be drained, flushed and then he will need to go on an oral antibiotic as well. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Just found this “ballooning” on my cats leg
Hello, thank you for your question about Milo. Based on the photo that you have attached it is possible that this lesion could be due to a cyst, abscess, or mass. A cyst is a benign fluid filled structure that can develop in various locations on animal's bodies. An abscess is an encapsulated infection that is most commonly associated with some kind of trauma, but can occur for an unknown reason. Masses, tend to feel more firm/solid and can be caused by many different types of cancers (benign or malignant). I would recommend having Milo evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can examine the lesion. They may recommend collecting an aspirate, or small needle, sample from the lesion to help determine exactly what it is. They can then discuss further treatment options based on these findings. If Felix got out, he may have gotten into a fight with another cat, gotten bitten, and it turned into an abscess. It sounds like the abscess has burst, but if it's painful, he does need to see a vet. I would take him into one first thing in the morning.

It's probably an abscess from a fight, you will need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked, if it is an abscess indeed the vet will need to sedate her, shave the area and lance the abscess to remove all the pus that gathered inside. she will also need an antibiotic injection.

Hi so my male cat snowflake has this on his right shoulder and it wasn't there earlier today but he has been in all day so I'm wondering is he got burned or what could cause this there is no puncture so what do I do
That picture looks like he may have a ruptured abscess. I suspect he may have had a fight or injury several days ago, but then it festered and finally ruptured today. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. In the meantime I would use a warm water compress applied to the area twice a day for 5 minutes or so at a time. I can understand being worried about TJ! I can see the lump from the picture you provided, and I have a few ideas as to what it may be. I see that he's not neutered, and intact males will frequently fight with other males for territory and females. If he's allowed outside, he could have gotten into a fight with another male, and developed an abscess from a cat bite. A cat's mouth has a lot of nasty bacteria in it, and abscesses are a common sequela to a cat bite. Abscesses are painful, so that may be why he's having trouble jumping on the bed. He could also have a cyst. Given that this lump is getting larger and he's having trouble getting onto your bed, I feel a vet visit in the morning is in order. The vet can diagnose what is causing the lump and how best to treat it. If he does have an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed, and he will need antibiotics to treat the infection. There's a lump on the back of my cat and it wasn't there yesterday. Whenever its touched he cries out in pain.
I wonder if this lump is potentially an abscess. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Loki sooner rather than later since he is in pain. They might recommend a fine needle aspirate which is a procedure where a small needle is used to take a sample to examine microscopically.
