My momma cat's kittens aren't gaining weight. Should I bottle feed?

Momma kitty had first litter of five a week ago. Concerned that momma might not be making enough milk for all five babies. Should I bottle feed babies to supplement momma's milk?

Are you sure Princess is not making enough milk for the kittens? Weigh the kittens every day. They should be gaining 10 grams a day. If they are not gaining that, then you need to supplement with kitten formula. I hope this helps.

You should be weighing them every day or two to make sure they are gaining weight. If the little on is not gaining weight then you will know it is a problem and you will need to get it to a vet. You can use a kitchen gram scale to weigh them.

As long as they are all continuing to gain weight steadily you can continue to monitor them for now. It is normal to see some variation among littermates. However if they're smaller kittens show other signs are not thriving such as decreased play behavior, being isolated from the other kittens, or they stop gaining weight then you need to try to supplement formula again.

Your best bet would be to bring the kitten into your vet. They can check for any issues such as congenital problems causing the weird back arching, cleft palate that affects nursing, etc that you may need to treat differently or take particular care for. If the kitten is otherwise healthy, adding in supplemental feeding may also help with weight gain if it can't nurse enough from mom.

Even though Cleo's nipples don't feel like they have milk, there will be milk present. I would weigh the kittens daily. Gaining 1/4 to half an ounce daily until they are weaned is considered healthy. Healthy kittens weight between 2.8-6 ounces when they are born. If you notice the kittens aren't gaining weight, then you may have to bottle feed them with kitten formula such as KMR to make sure they get enough nutrition.

Since they are only just getting the idea of how to nurse from the nipple that may be what has caused their weight to stall. You can try another brand but you may consider buying a different feeding system, try just a slip tip syringe, or using a bottle instead. Most kittens figure out the Miracle Nipple pretty easily. Make sure the syringes you're using work easily, that the plunger is not getting stuck and making it harder for them to suckle. If they are harder to move, you can pull out the plunger and wipe the rubber stopper part with and drop of mineral oil to make it slide easier. Also, call your vet and ask if they have anyone good at bottle feeding kittens that can show you what they do and give you some tips.

At 43 days of age, it's time for Tarcisio to be weaned off milk. Milk won't be enough at this point to meet his nutritional needs, so that may be why he's not gaining weight. To help him wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until he is eating the dry kitten food only.

The best thing you can do is to weigh her twice daily to make sure she's growing appropriately. Kittens should gain 10% of their birth weight per week, or if you don't know the birth weight you should make sure the kitten is gaining weight each day and not losing weight. If she is not gaining weight it would be a good idea to see a vet for an exam and potentially to supplement with bottle feeding.

Make sure the kittens stay warm. If they are not nursing well or she is not producing milk then you can bottle feed them to help. She should be fed kitten food as it has more calories and nutrients to help her keep her weight up and produce enough milk

Thank you for submitting your question regarding the kittens. Kittens should be weighed daily on a gram scale. If they are failing to gain weight each day this is a big problem. Other causes for concern no longer nursing, being listless or staying away from the other kittens. I hope this information helps!
