Can I treat my dog's pyometra with medication instead of surgery?

I have a 9 year old yorkshire terrier female dog we revently found out she has pyometra but she cant have an operation as shes weak and has cancer, is there any medication that well help to cure pyometra?

Antibiotics can be used, but they don't always cure a pyometra. The best treatment is surgery. If Narly cannot have surgery and she has cancer, it may be best to let her go peacefully. Pyometras make the dog extremely sick, and you do not want her to suffer if she cannot have surgery. There is no guarantee antibiotics will even help. I would speak to her vet about possibly letting her go if she can't have surgery. I am sorry.

Surgery is definitely the treatment of choice, as it is the only way to definitively resolve the infection. Was she diagnosed with a pyometra by your veterinarian? Typically, Xray or abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly) along with physical exam, history, and bloodwork findings are how we come to this diagnosis. I say that, because of course we wouldn't want her to go to surgery unnecessarily, so please understand that your vet would need to perform some diagnostics to determine that surgery is, indeed, the recommended course of action. Having said all of that, surgery is the preferred treatment for pyometra. Thank you for asking Boop by Petco!

My 13 yr old pug was diagnosed with pyometra. She is on medication right now but I'm wondering if there is something holistic I could give her?? They suggest surgery but unfortunately I don't believe she would make it through. :) Valerie
Surgery is in most of the cases the resolutive treatment and, if performed by an expert surgeon, it does not last more than 30 minutes, especially in small dogs. Medical treatment rarely is very effective. I would recommend to discuss with your veterinarian pros and cons of the anesthesia. Unfortunately holistic treatment won't be effective at this stage and for this type of disease.

It looks like from the ultrasound report that Lucy has a pyometra. This is a severe infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I agree with your vet's recommendation to have her uterus removed surgically (spay her). Treating a pyometra with antibiotics is typically not effective, and the recommended treatment with the best results is spaying the dog. I would follow your vet's advice and have her spayed asap. Leaving her with a pyometra will make her sicker and sicker, time is of the essence in treating this infection. Best of luck.

I'm sorry Chutki has a pyometra. She won't get her another heat while having a pyometra. Unfortunately medical treatment of a pyometra frequently does not work, and surgery is the best option for her. It sounds like the treatment isn't working if she still has a discharge 15 days later, and this infection likely will get worse and can kill her if not treated correctly. I would strongly recommend getting her the surgery. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Taffy. Unfortunately, surgery is the only ways to cure her if this condition. The sooner it is performed, the better as she will be less debilitated. If her veterinarian will not perform the surgery due to the risk, then you will need to seek specialist care. Otherwise you will need to discuss euthanasia with her veterinarian if she is suffering. I am sorry about her situation and hope this information helps.

I believe my dog has pyometra and I understand that being spayed is the correct way to deal with this, although I am 100% sure my dog will not survive the operation, what can I do?
First off, I'm sorry Maggie has a pyometra! Yes, you are correct that spaying her is the correct way to deal with it, and I do recommend having it done right away. The longer she has the pyometra, the sicker she will become, which will make the surgery more risky. Leaving it untreated is fatal, and in my opinion, it's better to have the surgery done and try to save her life even though you do take the chance she may not survive the surgery. I have seen numerous dogs and cats survive the surgery. One option you have is to euthanize her instead of doing the surgery. This will put her out of her suffering from the pyrometra, but it does mean you lose Maggie for sure. In same cases, such as with an open pyometra, medical treatment with antibiotics can be attempted, but that that often isn't successful and cannot be done with a closed pyometra. Only your vet can determine if medical treatment is an option for her. I would get her into a vet immediately, as the longer you delay trea

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco. I am very sorry Kitty has pyometra. Unfortunately the only way to cure pyometra is surgical removal of the uterus. Left untreated (no surgery), pyometra has a very high mortality rate. At this point, sadly, there is not a lot you can do as far as at home treatments. There is always a risk with surgery, especially when putting an animal under general anesthesia, but the benefit (saving Kitty) may outweigh the risks in this regard. Please consult with your veterinarian further.. He/she is more familiar with your pet and your pet's history and will be able to provide further council to aide in your decision.

I'm sorry Bella has a pyometra! A pyometra is a life threatening infection, there are no mild cases of it. It could be that your vet is trying to treat it medically with antibiotics since it sounds like it's an open pyometra, meaning that the cervix is open and allowing drainage. In cases of a close pyometra, the cervix is closed, the infection cannot drain, and the uterus needs to be removed to prevent it from rupturing. With open pyometras, you can try to treat it medically with antibiotics, especially if the dog isn't systemically ill. This is a treatment option for an open pyometra. If you feel like you'd like more in-depth treatment, which would include spaying her to remove her uterus, you can speak to your vet about having that done or seeing another vet for a second opinion.

In my opinion if she is not improving with medication after a few days I would do the operation. There is not another option if you've already tried antibiotics. She could die if you don't do the surgery. Anesthesia monitoring and giving fluids during the operation will decrease the risk for Kitty. Many senior dogs have surgeries without complications. I'm sorry Niomie is so sick. Pyometra is an infection of the uterus where the uterus basically fills with pus and infection. Dogs can become septic from this if the toxins and bacteria get into the bloodstream or if the uterus ruptures spilling the infection into the abdomen. Surgery is Niomies best chance at survival but this can be fatal even with the best of care and surgery. Surgery will remove the source of infection, but on recovery dogs still need fluids, pain medication and antibiotics post operative ly. Hoping that she pulls through and recovers well.
