My dog limps after resting, but walks fine later. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

Our corgi is limping/lame in her left rear leg after being at rest. She came out of her kennel yesterday morning as though she had slept hard on that side and the leg was numb. Once the leg “warms” up, her movement and activity level is pretty normal though she shifts her weight off it while standing still. We’ve been limiting her activity but the leg seems to stiffen up after each period of rest. What could be the cause and when should we see a vet? (One year old and hasn’t had her 1st heat)

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds that something is hurting in that leg. I suspect it could be the hip joint (as it often produces leg stiffness and intermittent limping). It still could be muscle sprain or knee problem. I would not leave this for longer than a week, even if Bella is not bothered by it and has normal appetite and energy level. You vet may prescribe her a course of anti-inflammatory medications or recommend an x-ray of the hips to make the definite diagnosis.
