Dog swallowed stick, gagging, struggles to drink. Need emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 30 lbs

My dog swallowed part of a stick about 9 hours ago. She seems to be uncomfortable when she tries to drink, although she is thirsty. She makes the gagging motion with her mouth without the gagging sound. She is otherwise normal and has been able to eat the few kibbles I’ve given. Do I need to rush her to the emergency vet?

HI and thanks for your request. I think these signs are concerning given the ingestion of the stick and they should be checked by your local veterinarian as soon as possible. Please take Ellie to your nearest emergency clinic.
