My dog's nail split. What should I do and can I treat it at home?

My dog caught his nail on something and now it’s split. Been putting hydrogen peroxide on it. Any suggestions on how to move forward?

That's a bad split. That will need to be removed, but do not do it at home. That will have to be done with the vet under sedation as it will be very painful. Get Baxter into a vet this weekend if he's limping or it appears infected. Otherwise, you can wait until Monday to have him seen. Wrap it in a bandage to keep it protected until he sees the vet, and do not allow him to lick the area. Do not put any more hydrogen peroxide on it. I hope this helps.

Ouch! That looks pretty split and should be trimmed back, especially if he is licking at it or limping as that can indicate pain. I would bring him to your vet so that he can be sedated and given some pain meds to make trimming any painful parts of the nail easier on him. Your vet can also provide you with longer-term pain meds and an antibiotic as needed to help it heal.

My dogs nail is split and I have no idea how to treat it. Right now we dont know if we can pay for a get but we dont want his nail to get infected or anything else. I am asking for advice to see if we do possibly need to go to the vet
This rarely get infected if disinfected properly, but a check up would be ideal just to cut off the remaining part of the nail. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (at least twice daily for the next 3-4 days. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. We are dog sitting a dog and his nail has split up into her paw. He was bleeding but it has stopped. I can tell he is in pain because he won’t let me touch it and keeps licking it. is there a medication I should I’ve him before I can go to the vet..
Hi there! Split toe nails are definitely painful but as long as you have a vet appointment soon, I wouldn't worry about doing anything at home. The vet will need to sedate Huck and remove the toenail to allow a new nail to grow back. Your vet will also probably send home some antibiotics to prevent infection and some pain medication. MY dogs front nail split right in the middle. We thought it was a nail growing under another nail. But it definitely split in half. Is there any way we can treat it at home without taking him to the vet ?
Sorry this happened to Thor! Honestly, the vet would pull off that top piece of nail (the white part) with a hemostat instrument. This is very painful and the nail may bleed a lot after that. So, if that part of the nail is very loose you may be able to pull it off - be aware that he may try to bite. It is very painful.... If it bleeds you can put some corn starch or flour on it and then bandage it. You can look at some YouTube videos on how to properly bandage the foot. Keep it bandaged for few days. If he is trying to eat the bandage or lick the nail you will need to get an E-collar (cone) to put on him until it's healed. It won't heal if he keeps licking it. Of course if he is limping, not eating, the nail won't stop bleeding, etc you will need to get Thor to the vet sooner. Hope this helps.

My dog was digging in the snow and I stopped her, came inside and noticed her not walking on front paw and saw the nail was split to the top and hanging, I do not know if I should cut it off as high as possible? it goes up all the way split right fro
If you attempt to cut this it will bleed badly snd cause a lot of pain. I would advise going to a vet and they will be able to pull the black shell of the nail out (not as bad as it sounds, the nail comes away easy with a good tug) then a bandage can be apllied to provide support for 24 hours.

Hello. The nail has indeed split & what you are seeing is the fleshy quick of the nail. My remedy is to snip off the hanging part of the nail & bandage the foot for a few days to protect the sensitive quick until it begins to heal. the top part of my dogs paw close to her nail is splitting. We've taken her to the vet but she will not allow them to examine her feet and gets quite cranky. They gave us some antibiotics so they would not become infected but 2 weeks after finishing
This may be a resistant infection or the area may keep getting reinfected because it is in a highly mobile spot where contamination is very easy (the foot). I would recommend taking your dog back to the vet for a recheck and having her sedated for the examination. This way the doctor will be able to closely examine the toe and the nail. The doctor will then be able to clip the nails back far enough to hopefully remove the problem. There is also a specific disease of the toenails that may need long-term treatment from specific medications. This is an auto-immune disease, lipoid onchodystrophy, and has a very specific presentation. Your vet should be able to determine if your dog has this condition with a thorough exam. My dog has cut his nail and I am hoping on soem insight on how to treat it. Should i be taking him in to be physically seen ?
Poor guy. Since its split down the middle there with nerve exposure, I would recommend getting him seen for this for sure. We just want to make sure it doesn't get infected or is causing Hendrix any pain. I hope that Hendrix's nail injury gets resolved soon! Best wishes and take care.

My dogs nail looks to have split along the side earlier today and was bleeding. Is this something I should see a vet about or can a groomer trim off the broken part of her nail? I think the nail is still attached to her nail bed/skin.
Poor baby. I would definitely go to the vet for that one. The groomer could pull it off, but there could be a lot of pain and bleeding. At the vet they can sedate him if needed, as well as send him home with a few days of pain medications or even antibiotics if he's been licking at it a lot.

what do I do with my dogs nail that he broke and the quick is exposed?
That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! If it is not bleeding you can wait until the morning for your vet to open
