My cat has lung inflammation. Why steroids, not antibiotics for URI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Vet saids my cat has some inflammation in the lungs by view of xray. He is not sure if it is asthma, he suspects an uri but he gave me these medications which are steriods?? Why not antibotics as well? vet assitant said prednisolone is an antibotic and a steriod but its a steriod isn't? The vet assistant had to be the mediator which mades things difficult in communication due to covid. The photo below shows the medication be prescribed but how will this help a possible uri if no antibotics?

In cats, URI are typically caused by a virus, not bacteria, so antibiotics will have no effect. That is likely why the vet did not prescribe Sweetie any antibiotics. They wouldn't work and using antibiotics when it's not called for results in decreased sensitivity to antibiotics and possible resistance. Albuterol relaxes the smooth muscle in the airways and provides relief from obstructive airway diseases, such as asthma. Albuterol belongs to a class of drugs called bronchodilators. Prednisolone is a corticosteroid, and it's used to help with inflammation. I hope this helps!
