My dog's bite wound is cracking open. Is it healing or infected?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 70 lbs

Is my dogs bite healing up well? My other dog bit her and it didn’t seem bad. We cleaned it with warm salt water and let it start to heal. The first day it looked fine. Day 2 it closed up well. Day 3 and 4 it seemed to crack and open back up due to licking. I cleaned once more with warm salt water. We are on day 6 and this is what it looks like.

In the picture, it looks ok. It will be hard to keep Mika from licking at it given its location, so just keep an eye on it for now. If there are signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus, warm to the touch), then she will need to see a vet. Best of luck.

It could be from an injury. I would gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.

My 10-year-old dog Lucke, has a deep wound on his back right quarter. He is not scratching, licking or biting at it.
Ouch, poor Lucke! Thank you for providing pictures of his wound. From the picture, it looks like it could benefit from a stitch or two to help it heal properly. I would take him into a vet right away so the wound can be cleaned and stitched. I hope this helps!

It’s so tough to tell from pictures alone, but I don’t see anything alarming. If you see any discharge from the wound, or if it seems to be opening up I’d recheck from the vet. From what I can see, if healing continues normally Olive should be fine.

My pet did not like the e collar and he licks himself but it doesn’t seem like he has an infection, it’s a bit red but I think his sutures opened should I take him for a check up?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! From the photo, it looks like Milo has sutures under the skin, which you cannot see. There does seem to be a mild amount of swelling and redness of the incision, and a very slightly opened area. Swelling and redness, especially if accompanied by discharge, are signs of infection. Milo should definitely be wearing his E-collar at all times. Licking and chewing can cause the sutures to loosen and the incision to open. You can apply a warm compress the the area several times a day to reduce swelling and promote healing. If you notice that incision opens more, there is any bleeding or discharge, or the area feels hot to the touch, Milo should be seen by his vet as soon as possible. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Does it look like her wound is healing well? It’s been a week today since she got hurt.
The wound actually looks very good. Make sure it does not get contaminated with dirt. You need to keep your dog from licking the wound as the licking may get it infected with bacteria. Should the wound start to ooze or show pus, you should have it examined by a vet who will then give you an antibiotic ointment to alleviate that.

I would not worry about this incision. If the opening is no bigger than what I see on the photo, it will likely just crust over and heal by itself. There is no infection visible (not red, no pus) so antibiotics are not needed. You will need to tighten the cone a bit more, so he cannot take it off again. You may also put a t-shirt on him so he cannot reach his incision. He must not lick it. If the incision still looks like this on Monday, ie, not worse, then you do not need to take him to the vet.

My dog has what looks like a bite?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor girl! This actually look more like a scab from some mild trauma. While I do not see evidence of a bite in that picture, that is still possible and an examination would be needed to determine that for sure. Because it is small and mild, I think it would be ok to treat at home. You may apply a thin film of triple antibiotic ointment on the affected area twice daily for 5 days. If this does not improve or resolves, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. There is a very good chance that this will improve quickly. However, if you notice any signs of worsening, like severe swelling, have her evaluated. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog was attacked by another dog I took her to the vet the vet irrigated the wound and left them open give her amoxicillin for medication and was told to put a hot compress on twice a day we're doing that but the wound is open I don't know if that'
From what I can tell (the photos are very grainy), the wound appears to be healing fine. I suggest you continue treatment as your vet recommended for now. I strongly recommend you take her back to your vet for a progress check-up in about 5-7 days. They will be able to tell you better if it looks to be healing well since they saw the initial injury.

This is not good. Had your dog not been licking the wound, she would not have needed an antibiotic , as your vet worked very cleanly. However, now that she can lick the wound she is licking bacteria into it. This does indeed look infected now, You can clean it up a bit with warm water and put some neosporine on it until you can take her back to the vet for a recheck and some medications. If possible cover the wound with a sock or t-shirt or similar, so she cannot lick it or get a larger cone at a petshop.

Poor guy. Bite wounds often are left open in small areas to allow the infection to drain out before it then heals over by 2nd intention healing. I would only suggest covering this with a loose t-shirt for now. As long as there are no signs of infection (yellow or purulent discharge with a foul odor) and no large gaping openings (typically >2 cm), then it should be ok to wait until Monday to get him checked again by your vet. Based on the picture I don't see any majorly open wounds there. You can safely flush this area with sterile saline from your local pharmacy to help keep infection at bay since the wounds are slightly open. But again, dog bite woulds can be left often for the first few days to allow draining to occur before things heal up on their own with granulation tissue that the body will make itself. I do hope that Aussie's wounds heal up well soon! Best of luck moving forward and take care.
