My dog's poop has red dots. Is it serious? She ate human food.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 6 lbs

Today my dog’s stool has red dots all over it. This is the first time I’ve seen this. Yesterday she was sleeping all day and didn’t want to do much(might be due to the rainy weather). However today, she seems energetic running around and had no problem finishing her food. I do notice that recently my family members would sneak her human food sometimes. I’m not sure if her stool is urgent/serious or if there’s anything I can give her to make her feel better?

Hello, thank you for your question about Thea. I am sorry that Thea isn't feeling well. Based on the symptoms that you describe and the photo that you've attached I suspect that Thea is experiencing colitis (inflammation of the colon) secondary to getting human food. A dog's GI system is usually not used to digesting human food, which usually contains more fat than dog food, and it often causes them to have an upset stomach. Diarrhea with some blood is often one of the first symptoms. I would recommend offering Thea a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for a few days to help settle her stomach down. If this does not improve her symptoms or Thea becomes lethargic again I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. They would likely recommend further testing to look for other underlying problems. Hope this helps, good luck!
