What's this hard, painless lump on my dog's leg? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Today i noticed a hard lump on my dogs leg, i cut his hair around it for a better view. If i touch it he doesn’t cry or move, i would love to know if it looks like something serious or not.

It doesn't look very dramatic, but since it just seemed to pop up, I recommend getting it checked by your vet. It could be a scar or an unknown injury, it could be a growth of some kind, there's no way to know without getting a vet to investigate. Your vet will do an exam, some lab work, and based on these results will be better able to tell you what it is and how best to treat, if it needs treatment.

This looks like a growth of some sorts, but it could also be from an injury. Without seeing Bentley in person, I can't say for certain what it is, so I'd have him seen by a vet to have it diagnosed and treated.

It’s a little difficult to tell from your picture if this is raised. If so, it could be a cyst or a skin growth or tumor. If it is flat it could be a scar. I would recommend having your vet take a look particularly since it seems to have grown some. If it is raised they may want to take a sample using a small needle to determine what it might be.
