My dog has cold symptoms and I have COVID. Does he need medicine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 80 lbs

Hi I just tested positive for COVID-19 and my Labrador has been showing symptoms of a cold. The only symptoms I noticed are a runny nose and maybe a reduced appetite. I just moved and do not have a vet but the CDC website said to consult with a vet if this occurs. Does my dog need medicine? Thanks

I'm so sorry you have Covid! I hope you feel better soon. There is no definitive proof that dogs can get Covid from humans, but if Slash is showing signs of a cold, then he should see a vet especially since he has a reduced appetite. It could be with the runny nose he can't smell his food. If he can't smell it, he won't eat it. Try gently warming up some canned food or giving him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones and white rice) to encourage him to eat. Since he has a runny nose, take him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower or put him in a room with a humidifier. These methods can help with congestion. Give his vet a call and they may prescribe him medication. I hope this helps!
