My senior dog has an eyelid cut. Can it heal without stitches at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 15 years and 10 months old | 30 lbs

My dog has a bottom middle eyelid laceration. Will this heal on it's own without stitches? We are flushing it twice a day and applying antibiotic ointment. He acts like a tasmania devil when we try to apply side and wont allow us to bandage it in anyway. He is 15 and already partially blind. Thank you for any advice you could give.

It should heal on its own. But without really examining him in person myself it’s kind of hard to say with 100% certainty. I would just keep doing what you’re doing. Keep it clean and apply an anabiotic ointment 2-3 times per day. Be sure not to use any hydrogen peroxide as that will delay healing and could damage the eye if it gets on the eyeball.
