My senior dog is peeing in the house. How do I stop the accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 8 months old | 22 lbs

My mini doberman pekingese mix is 12. He is not going to the bathroom outside but goes in the house. We don't feed him late or a lot, but the problem is still there. Any advice?

If this is a new issue for Dash, I would bring him to your vet for a senior wellness exam. Sometimes, older pets can have trouble getting outside to go potty, or may have issues with being able to hold their potty. Ruling out or treating problems such as arthritis, early dementia, nerve pain, and other health issues may help reduce the accidents in the house. Until you can get to your vet, returning to a more "puppy" style of potty training by taking him out more often, 15 minutes after eating, drinking, waking, playing, etc may help reduce accidents and allow him enough chances to go outside.
