Why is my budgie sleeping a lot, fluffed up, but still playing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | 6 years and 6 months old | 50 lbs

My Pet Budgie has been sleeping a lot & fluffed up. He seems to play still & eating occasionally. I've gave him a bird vitamin in water to give him a immune boost.

Thanks for reaching out about Vic and including photos. Unfortunately fluffed and sleeping are just general signs of being ill. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can provide some aid but is not a treatment per se. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Metabolic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, opportunistic infections and cancer are common in aging budgieregars, each requiring different treatments. Good luck.

Sleepiness is very vague and can be due to many things. It may be that Jerry just is taking a nap (it is normal for birds to nap some during the day) if he is otherwise healthy and active. Being too hot or too cold may also make birds want to sleep more, so making sure his cage is kept somewhere free of drafts and shaded can help. Making sure he is eating enough of his regular food and not too many extra treats can also ensure he gets enough nutrition and energy to be healthy. If the sleepiness continues all day to the point that he isn't doing his normal activities, or you see other signs of illness such as changes in eating and drinking habits, loose stool, wounds, etc, then having a vet take a look is best to rule out more serious issues.
