My husky is losing hair in patches with black skin. Is this normal?

My husky is loosing hair in patches where his hair is normally the longest on both sides of his neck and on both hind legs. Seems to be black skin. His diet hasn’t changed since puppy and now almost 2 years old. He did swim in pool everyday but even after restricting him from pool for over month didn’t get better. Gave him flea/tick medication 2 weeks ago too. What can I do to grow his hair back? Is this normal for this to happen to huskies?

No, this hair loss does not sound normal and it does not look normal in the picture. Reggie could have a skin infection, fungal infection, or mange among other things causing his hair loss. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. He does need to see a vet to have this diagnose and treated. I recommend giving his vet a call now to make him an appointment. Hello, it looks like Lucky may be shedding his winter coat since it is starting to warm up. If he does have an active skin condition however, look for any sings of itchiness, anxiety, further hair loss, red skin, and scabs. Dogs with skin allergies may also bite and chew at their feet constantly, and environmental allergies are common during this time of the year. If you note any of these, then have lucky seen by his veterinarian as he may need medications. Please also make sure that he has monthly flea and tick control as fleas can also cause severe itchiness and hair loss, especially around his lower back, legs and belly. My husky is losing hair and is scalely were the hair is falling out. His skin underneath is turning black.
It is possible shadow is starting to develop allergies. The most common type are flea, food and environment. However husky breed are prone to zinc deficiencies which affect their coat. I would recommend taking to a veterinarian to assess the skin. I would use flea prevention every 30 days to help with a possible allergy.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Judging from the photos you have provided and seeing that Prince is a young dog, I would suspect demodex mites as the primary cause. Allergies is another possibility but I would have Prince examined by your vet to have the appropriate tests performed (such as a skin scraping to check for mites) to get Prince the most appropriate treatment. Is it bad if my dogs hair is falling off
If it’s normal shedding, it’s totally ok. However, if your dog is losing hair in patches (which is what it looks like in your picture), then I would be concerned. Your dog probably has a skin infection likely from external parasites or an allergy. If there are several areas of missing hair and then I think it would be a good idea to take your dog to the vet and be checked out. Your dog may need some antibiotics and anti-itch medication to help clear things up.

I'm sorry but it is difficult to tell anything from the photo. If there are no bald spots present them I am guessing it is normal shedding for that breed of dog. We call it "blowing their coat". Why is my huskys fur becoming thin and falling out leaving bare patches on his body ( back legs , chest and back ) ? He has these red almost rashes in the areas and once it appears He scratches it like crazy we’ve checked for fleas , and other insect
Those spots on Pedro could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. You may also try treating him for fleas to see if that helps. You may not always be able to find fleas. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I see what you mean. When a dog loses hair, it takes time for it to grow back, up to a couple of months. Keep an eye on it, and if the hair loss gets worse, have Sky seen by a vet again. Best of luck.

You really should have your vet check this out. The number one reason for hair loss and itchiness in puppies is mange. Of course there are other things that could cause this type of lesion. This could indicate an allergy to the environment, food or another skin disease like sabeceous adenititis or an autoimmune disease. Sometimes an oatmeal based pet shampoo and conditioner help as well as omega 3 fatty acid supplements. However if this is due to an allergy he may need a long term medication like Apoquel for control. If Shadow gets worse, or the over the counter treatments don't work, he needs to get checked out by his veterinarian.

With healthy shedding there is no bald spots. So to me, this looks like either mange or a flea allergy. I know you said he isn’t scratching but some of the areas do look red (could just be photo quality). With the flea allergy they’re actually allergic to the saliva of the flea so it only takes one to bite them for a reaction to happen; but usually they are scratching. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam so they can give you a diagnosis and he can get the proper treatment.
