My Frenchie ate Ferrero Roche chocolate. Should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 30 lbs

Our 30lb Frenchie just got into our Ferrero Roche chocolate on the counter. We were gone for about 3 hours so I’m not sure when exactly it happened. She had about 8-10 pieces. Should we take her to the vet or monitor until the morning?

I'd just monitor Layla for now. There isn't a lot of chocolate in Ferrero Roche and the amount she ate should not cause any problems. It can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to occur, so watch her over that time period to be safe. If you do see any signs of toxicity, then I would take her into the vet. Uh-oh, naughty pup! In all likelihood, your pup will be fine. The danger of toxicity depends on how much chocolate and what kind. All chocolate can be toxic to dogs, but it really depends on the amount of cocoa in the chocolate. Cooking and dark chocolate are worst, milk and white chocolate aren’t so bad. This website can help you determine if your dog needs emergency vet care right away: petmd.com/dog/chocolate-toxicity It’s worth mentioning, however, that even if the amount of cocoa isn’t likely to be toxic, the fat in large amounts of chocolate can also be dangerous, as it can cause acute pancreatitis. Hi there, if you wish you could have him checked over but the effect of the chocolate per se will likely be gastrointestinal signs. A tummy upset and no severe toxicity signs There is also sugar and fat between the ingredients which could trigger pancreatitis over the next few days. You have therefore the option of having him checked over now or monitor at home. If he should start to vomit and/or have diarrhoea you could have him checked over then. I also advise to feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice , in small meals from tomorrow for 3-4 days. Alternatively you could offer him some gastrointestinal food from Hill’s or Royal canine . Your vet should stock these ! Hope all goes well

My dog ate a chocolate crossaint this morning, should I be worried?
Oh dear! It would help to have a better idea of how large the croissant was and how much chocolate was in it as well as how much your dog weight, since we would need this information in order to figure out if this is a possible toxic dose or not. I can tell you that from my experience, my gut impression is that there is probably not enough actual cocoa content in a single chocolate croissant to cause any serious problems in a medium-sized dog - but without specific details, I'm afraid I can't give a more concrete answer than that. If you want to be on the safe side, you could take Littlefella to an emergency vet today - the vet there can give him an injection to induce vomiting, and also administer activated charcoal to help prevent absorption. If you opt not to do this, I would monitor him for the next 6-12 hours for any problems. Symptoms of chocolate toxicity would include restlessness or hyperactivity, a racing heart rate, muscle tremors, or seizures. If you have any concerns

It's best to take her to the vet considering the amount of chocolate ingested is unknown and she was vomiting (an early sign of chocolate toxicity). It's also concerning that she ate the wrappers, because these can cause problems in the intestines as well. The vets will be able to monitor Rane for further signs of toxicity and give medication as necessary to keep things from getting worse. I hope that helps and all is well with Rane.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Scooter. One ferrero rocher shouldn't cause serious problems, but it can cause stomach upset. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then in the morning feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. My 100 lbs lab ate 16 ounces of chocolate frosting.
I am assuming it was milk chocolate frosting - if so you might see vomiting and diarrhea, and it would be best to see a veterinarian to induce vomiting if it happened in the past couple of hours. If it has been longer you can probably monitor for any vomiting and diarrhea and see a veterinarian if they occur.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Layla. You are right that it can take a while for symptoms to occur, sometimes up to 24 hours after ingestion. How worried you should be depends on the amount of chocolate she ate and the type of chocolate. If she ate dark chocolate, your MIL should rush her into a vet immediately as it doesn’t take a lot to cause toxic symptoms. Milk chocolate will require more to cause symptoms. If she ate milk chocolate, I wouldn’t rush home just yet. Have your MIL watch her for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and muscle tremors. If she sees any of those signs, the dog will need to see a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Hello! My 5-6 lbs Miniature Pinscher got into my cousins Easter chocolate. It was one of those Milk Chocolate 2.6 oz chocolate bars. She couldn’t have gotten a hold of more than .8 oz, if that. Should I rush her to the vet?
It's best to take her to the vet, so they can induce vomiting and prevent any toxic effects if the chocolate was eaten within the last two hours. There is a risk of a mild to moderate reaction based on Baby's weight and the amount of chocolate suspected to have been ingested. Signs of toxicity include hyperexcitability, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors and seizures. If you are noticing any of these signs, then it's best to take Baby to the vet right away.
