My cat is losing fur, but acts normal and her skin looks fine. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 10 lbs

My cat Spots is losing her fur. She acts normal. Eats, drinks, goes to the bathroom all normal. She runs and plays and jumps like normal. Her skin doesn't seem to have any lesions or bite marks or signs of a rash. It looks like her normal skin. Her skin isn't exposed, there's still some fur on her like in the photo. I put flea meds on her and it didn't make a difference. She's had this issue for a few months. What could this be?

It looks like feline overgrooming. In some cats, it can be brought on by itching (like fleas or mites or allergies), but in others it can be a sign of disease or stress/anxiety. I would recommend working with your vet to determine the cause so that Spots can start an appropriate treatment plan.
