My dog has strawberry jam-like diarrhea and won't eat. What's wrong?

Hi, my dog has diarrhea that looks like strawberry jam. She seems fine otherwise but won't eat.

It's pretty serious that Foxy's diarrhea that looks like strawberry jam (that tells me there is blood in it), and that she won't eat. Because of this, a home remedy is not recommended. She should see a vet immediately as this could be caused by something serious such as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Strawberry jam like feces can be a sign of colitis or hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis. Both are serious conditions that need to be investigated and treated by a veterinarian. This can indeed be stress induced. Both is painful, and your dog will need pain medicine, antibiotics and fluids, and possibly hospitalization. Please take her to a vet today.

Raspberry jam diarrhea often means hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which is a very severe form of diarrhea that often requires hospitalization on IV fluids to treat. If it was just one episode, and the diarrhea doesn't now have much blood and seems to be resolving, you may be ok to wait and watch her. However, if you still see lots of blood in the feces, she needs to get to a vet for an examine right away.

This problem is likely to be related to a colitis (inflammation of the last part of the intestine). It is quite common and usually dietary related. It is nothing to be extremely worried about unless signs of lethargy and vomiting are noticed. Hydration is usually not an big concern at this stage as there may be a mild dehydration but not clinically significant at this stage. What best home remedy for diarrhea and loss of appetite for my dog?
The diarrhea could be caused by any number of things; intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection, even being constipated will sometimes manifest as diarrhea because liquid feces is all that will get by the impacted fecal material. It could be as simple as a dietary indiscretion, meaning she might have gotten into the trash and eaten something that didn't agree with her. Try taking away all food, treats included, for 24 hours. S/he can still have water. This will give the gut a chance to rest. After the 24 hours are up, introduce just a small amount of normal food. Wait a little while and give a little more. Keep doing this until s/he has had her normal amount for the morning. However, if s/he continues to have loose stool, or starts vomiting, loses her appetite, acts lethargic, and/or develops a fever, get her in to be seen by your vet right away as this could indicate a more serious problem.

At her size it is best if she goes to the ER vet. When they have that much blood in trbstool it does not take long before they are weak and lethargic due to dehydration. I have a 10 year old yorkie. She hasn’t been eating in a few days. She just pooped and it was a lot of blood she’s also been drinking a lot of water and has been contipated. When the poop came out today it was watery.
I'm concerned about Foxxy and her symptoms. First off, it's quite serious that she hasn't been eating for a few days, she's a senior dog and not eating is a signal something is wrong. It sounds like she has diarrhea if she has watery poop and blood in the poop is quite serious. I also see that she isn't spayed. When dogs aren't spayed, they are prone to an infection of the uterus called a pyometra. A pyometra is deadly without immediate veterinary attention. Two signs of a pyometra include not eating and drinking a lot of water. I think this is a medical emergency and she needs a vet now. This cannot be treated at home. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Poor Skittles! It sounds like she's quite sick. Bloody diarrhea and not eating are always symptoms that warrant a vet visit, so I would recommend taking her in for an exam as soon as possible. She may have a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, a serious GI issue like pancreatitis or HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), or may have ingested something toxic. Your veterinarian can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

On no, poor Ayla! Bright red diarrhea indicates she is bleeding from her lower intestinal tract, and that can be caused by toxin ingestion, eating something rotten, a foreign body, trauma to the GI tract, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or even cancer. It's considered serious when a dog has bloody diarrhea, and it's best to have her checked out by a vet right away for it especially since she isn't eating as well. The vet can diagnose what is causing her bloody diarrhea and anorexia, and can treat her for it.

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm so sorry to hear that Jedi is so unwell. Her symptoms are very serious and warrant immediate attention by a veterinarian. Possible causes of her illness include toxin ingestion, severe gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, parasites, or an intestinal foreign body. When she sees the vet, they will perform a full physical exam, and may recommend blood work or x-rays to pinpoint the cause of illness. At minimum, they can offer supportive treatments such as fluid therapy to help rehydrate her, stomach protection medications, and anti-diarrhea medications. In the meantime, try to offer small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and plain white rice. Offer water in small frequent amounts as well. I hope this helps, and that Jedi feels better soon.

Poor Foxy! As difficult as it may be, he should be taken to a veterinarian. A physical exam, blood work and xrays may be necessary to diagnose the underlying condition. Supportive care (IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, etc) may also be indicated. Do not give him any medications without the advice of a veterinarian. You can try offering a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Serve it in small, frequent amounts. Warming it up may stimulate Foxy's appetite. An electrolyte replacement solution, such as PediaLyte or similar product, can also be offered.
