My dog has a red swollen paw. Is it a bite, allergy, or injury?

I just noticed this red swollen area on Lina’s paw. Not sure if it’s a bite or allergies, or injury of some kind.

Unfortunately there is no picture attached to your post (we've been having problems with pictures showing up in posts and consults, the tech team is working on it), so I can't see what this swollen area looks like on Lina's. You are right it could be from a bite, allergy, or injury. Even if I could see a picture, I can't make a diagnosis without seeing her in person so I recommend getting it checked out by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. If possible, I'd take her into a vet this weekend. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It could have been that she got bit by something or it could have been some type of traumatic injury of a different kind. Other possibilities include an infection for instance. I recommend you check in with your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My dog has a red swollen area on her paw. She is walking on is but licking it when she sits down. Doesn't seem to be in pain
Poor Georgia! There are a number of things that could cause a red, swollen area like this on her paw. This could be a localized infection or inflammatory reaction of some kind, such as from an insect bite or sting. It could also be a skin growth or tumor, either benign or malignant (cancerous). I would recommend having this checked by a vet within the next few days, if you are able to. He/she can do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate to help determine what this lump is. Based on the results, the vet can advise you on whether Georgia needs to be treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, or whether the lump needs to be surgically removed.

I believe my dog has an insect bite on her paw. Is there some way I can treat this?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to see that Savie is having a problem. This looks like a pustule or pus filled pimple. It could also be a cyst or other swelling. This could certainly be from an insect sting, spider bite, puncture wound, skin infection, etc. I would advise warm compressing the area 2-3 times daily with a warm cloth to see if you can get the area to come to a head and drain. You could also try placing some warm water and Epsom Salts in a basin and make her stand in the water for 5-10 minutes a few times daily. You may need to get her an E collar to prevent her from licking it and prevent the healing. If this lesion gets worse, spreads, or other signs develop, please have your vet take a look at her. They can get a detailed history and perform a physical exam. Diagnostics probably won't be needed unless the situation changes. Your vet can advise you on a sound treatment approach if needed. It could be allergies, a skin infection or a very slight injury, i would recommend just monitoring it for now, if you judge that it is getting worse in the next week or so then take her to the vet to get it checked and treated.

Unfortunately I can’t tell from the photo if that is a skin growth like a tumor or an infection. I recommend to protect the area from any licking and she should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. I also recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. If this is a skin tumor, it should be aspirated to make sure it’s not cancer. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. . Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your dog should be checked out by your vet. Lumps are usually one of these things: * abscess * cyst * tumor * wart There is no way I can tell you what it is just by looking at a photo but I have a suspicion it is a histiocytoma (benign tumor) or a cyst. The product you are using will not hurt but it will not make this go away. It is not urgent but you should get her to your vet for an exam in the next few days.

My dog has a swollen red spot on her paw. What is it?
If you noticed arise suddenly, then I would be most suspicious of something like a thorn or grass awn stuck under the skin. These can cause a great deal of inflammation and infection. This would require veterinary treatment in order to remove the cause of the swelling and prescribe the appropriate medication. If this has been slowly getting bigger, then it may be a tumor or an injury that has been licked excessively. None of the causes are an emergency, but all would require a veterinarian to diagnose the problem, so I recommend making an appointment in the next day or two. In the meantime, it would not hurt to soak the foot in warm salt water for 15 minutes. You can also apply ice to help give some relief. I hope that helps and Snowflake gets better soon.
