My cat has fleshy skin on her nose. Can I treat it without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 3 months old | 12.5 lbs

Hi, I have a 6 year old feline who appears to have fleshy skin around the nose area (on the bottom of the nose and in between the nose and the mouth). I am very young and my family cannot afford to take her to the vet. I am worried about her, and was wondering if you could tell me what she might have and what I can use to treat it at home. If it helps or is somehow related in anyway, she is a few pounds overweight of the average cat.

From the pictures, that looks like a skin infection and unfortunately this cannot be treated at home. Patty does have to see a vet. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. I'd also see if you can borrow money from family and friends. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com http://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets http://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/when-pet-owners-cant-afford-veterinary-bills/ http://www.dogheirs.com/resources-affordable-veterinary-care/ I hope this helps.
