My puppy has Metronidazole side effects. Will a lower dose work?

Hello, My puppy is infected with various intestinal parasites. She is only 4 weeks old. We took her to the vet and she got prescribed Metronidazole pills. We are supposed to give her 25mg (half a pill) every 12 hours. But, when we did this, she began to experience terrible neurological side effects like dizziness, stiffness, unresponsiveness, and not eating or sleeping. I decided to cut that dosage in half, giving her 12.5mg every 6 hours. Will the medication still be effective given this way?

Unfortunately no, it may not be enough to be effective. I'm quite concerned that Kaia is having neurological symptoms and that is a medical emergency. This is not something you should see how she does at home or try to treat at home, this requires a vet visit right away. I strongly urge you to take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. It is a low dose based on Coby's weight. There can be long term side effects from using it. Do not lower the dose or give it every other day. It has to be given as prescribed in order to work. Best of luck.

Oh no, it's not good that Bella ate the metronidazole tablet! There is a wide range of doses for metronidazole for dogs depending on the condition being treated, and at her weight and the dose she ate, the tablet is within the range of doses. It's on the higher end, but still within the dose range. That being said, you could see some side effects from eating this medication, such as GI upset. Excessive salivation, gagging, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite are the most common side effects seen. If you see any of those signs, withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Rarely you can see neurological disorders from an accidental overdose, but she likely may not show these signs due to her not overdosing. Lethargy (loss of energy) following a dose of metronidazloe is a sign of a possible drug reaction. Her biting everything could be a sign of discomfort? This is quite an unusual symptom, so it is hard to say for sure. Most of the time a reaction to Metronidazole involves any of the following: neurological symptoms (i.e. seizure, head tilt, etc), stomach upset (vomiting and or diarrhea) and lethargy. I would suggests calling your vet in the morning to ask if the medication should be continued. They likely will have you stop the medication and try an alternative one. Also, I would make sure you are giving this medication with a full meal, to reduce adverse reactions. I hope that everything works out well for your pet Daisy. Best wishes and take care.

Poor Maxine, it sounds like she is very sensitive to medication which can commonly occur. Metronidazole can be hard on any dog's system especially depending on dose. In an ideal world you would speak to the prescribing vet before stopping the medication as they know the story regarding why they have prescribed it. But if this is not possible we must use best evidence, and in this case it would seem considering her history that the drug is causing the head tremors. These could get worse the more she takes the medication. Some year in her bottom is not going to do her serious harm immediately and there are other treatment options. I would try and speak to your vet as soon as you can but in the mean time don't give any more medication. If her condition starts to deteriorate take her to an emergency vet in case there is something else going on. When you speak to your vet make sure and explain how sensitive she has been in the past and with trial and error​ you will find a way to treat h

Metronidazole is a very commonly used drug to treat Giardia as well as other conditions. At a normal dose, Metronidazole rarely causes any side effects at all in pets. Nausea/decreased appetite would be the most common side effect (but once again, this is rare). At very high doses or long term dosing (taking nonstop for months) we can see neurological effects, but this do not occur at a dose that would be used to treat Giardia. Hello! I would follow your veterinarian’s recommendation for medications at this time but if the diarrhea is not improving, some diagnostic tests will need to be performed to help guide treatment. Talk to your vet about blood work and an abdominal ultrasound (a sonogram of the belly). Diarrhea that becomes chronic (ongoing for weeks) can be due to inflammatory bowel disease, cancer in the GI tract, or even inflammation in the pancreas or liver. I am so glad to hear he is eating and acting normally... it is not an emergency to have further testing done but if it is not resolving, seek additional tests. Ultimately this may even include obtaining biopsies of the intestine via endocscopy or surgery— however blood work and an ultrasound will give some insight as to the best options moving forward. I misread the dosage of a metronidazole antibiotic prescribed for my 2lb kitten. .25ml 2x/day was prescribed and I gave her 25ml once. she is fine now but I am scared she may become very ill.
Sorry for the scare! One mLis much less scary! (And I was wondering how you got 25 mLs Into a kitten that small!) II would say stop the medication for 24 hours and monitor. The neurological side effects are still possible but much much less likely. If she’s doing well, restart the medication at the proper dose and call it a day!

I gave my cat half a tablet of 250 mg metronidazole approximately 14 hours ago and when I got home, she was walking with her head down and stumbling a little bit. This was prescribed by a vet to help control IBS. She did eat her dinner and is alert.
Some animals will have neurologic toxicity with metronidazole. I am suspicious that this may be causing her symptoms. However, other things could be causing it as well. If she continues to have problems this evening especially if they worsen then I would recommend she be seen tonight. If she seems to improve then I would see your regular veterinarian tomorrow. It would not be a good idea to stop metronidazole now and the symptoms may come back. Please, complete 5 days of treatment and then double-check with your vet that it is ok to stop the medication. The dose of metronidazole Leo was prescribed is ok (100mg every 12hrs).

Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. It is my recommendation that you keep Loki on all the medications prescribed by your vet. If you want to change the medications you should discuss your concerns with your vet. They have all her medical history and know why they prescribed the medications they did, etc. Any drug can have side effects and be dangerous. I would not classify Metronidazole as dangerous; it really doesn't cause much in the way of side effects unless they are given a very high dose. There is a huge issue in veterinary medicine with owners not following through with the entire course of medications they are given: #1 this causes bacterial resistance and then when we really need these drugs they don't work and #2 the infection is not completely resolved so when you stop the drug the dog will often come down with the same issue because the infection was not properly cleared.
