My puppy has Metronidazole side effects. Will a lower dose work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Malinois | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 7 days old | 4 lbs

Hello, My puppy is infected with various intestinal parasites. She is only 4 weeks old. We took her to the vet and she got prescribed Metronidazole pills. We are supposed to give her 25mg (half a pill) every 12 hours. But, when we did this, she began to experience terrible neurological side effects like dizziness, stiffness, unresponsiveness, and not eating or sleeping. I decided to cut that dosage in half, giving her 12.5mg every 6 hours. Will the medication still be effective given this way?

Unfortunately no, it may not be enough to be effective. I'm quite concerned that Kaia is having neurological symptoms and that is a medical emergency. This is not something you should see how she does at home or try to treat at home, this requires a vet visit right away. I strongly urge you to take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. Best of luck.
