My puppy has worms after dewormer. Do my other pets need treatment?

I just got my puppy two days ago and today I took her to the vet and she got her first shot and dewormer. But this evening I found a worm in her poop. Should I get medication for my other dog and cat? or did the worm from my puppy not have enough time to pass onto my other babies?

Since Apollo has been with you for two days, that could be enough time for your other pets to contract worms as well. So yes, I would get medication to deworm your other pets. Keep them all on a regular deworming schedule. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This means that Ace would benefit from being started on another dose of deworming medications. The best medication for this is usually chosen based on a fecal examination to determine which parasite is affecting Ace. The same deworming medication can be given to your other dog. I recommend that you have them evaluated by a your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

I just got a new pup yesterday. She was wormed at 8 weeks but when she had her first poop today there were worms. My question is do I need to keep her separate from my other animals? She has an appointment for 12 week shots and deworming Saturday.
If you have an appointment this Saturday then I would not do anything for Delphine until then. Rest assured gastrointestinal tract worms are very common in young puppies, this is why so many worming treatments are completed in their first year of life. If you have other animals in the home it would be best to keep Delphine separate for the time being.

Congratulations on your new puppy! She should be dewormed every 2-4weeks depending upon the product used until 6months and every 1-3months thereafter depending on where you live and local risk factors. Your vet can help arrange a schedule at your next wellness/vaccine visit. I would recommend talking to your physician or pharmacist for advice on working your family as some roundworms are transferable to people, especially children

By your description, it could be tapeworm. You should wait 2-3 weeks before repeating the treatment. It is common to see a purge of dead or dying parasites after a deworming. Since tapeworm is spread by fleas, you should treat all pets in the house as well as the house for fleas for at least 3 consecutive months, preferably year round.

According to the lady I got him from, last night was his second dose of dewormer. I haven't seen any signs of worms until this morning. Should I contact their vet or do they need more doses of dewormer?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! That's good that you see adult worms, it means the medication is working! I would have your Vet recheck a stool sample in 3 weeks to be sure no eggs are present. The 2 doses may be enough to kill the adult worms. Also he will be started on heartworm prevention that also is a monthly dewormer when you bring him to your Vet to continue vaccines. Thia morning i noticed that our puppy had worms in uts stool. I checked Shaka stool and it was clear. Can the other puppy affect Shaka?
Worms can be transmitted from dog to dog, although generally the eggs have to be present in the stool for a couple of days before they can infect another dog. I would recommend taking the puppy to your veterinarian so they can determine what type of worm it is. If Shaka is on heartworm prevention there might not be any other treatment required, but your vet might want to check a stool sample or start a dewormer for Shaka if there are eggs in his stool as well. Not all dogs will pass recognizable worms in their stool, but if there are worms in the intestinal tract there should be eggs on a stool analysis.

Can a dog still have worms after giving them 2 doses of pills not even a week apart?
Yes she sure can. It can take up to 1 week to rid the first round of worms in her system. Then as the worms in her system go through their 2 week life cycle (from baby worms to adult worms that you see in the poop) they should be treated again as a re-emergence of worms is seen. So the deworming schedule that I follow to ensure all worms (baby's and adults) are gone is as follows: 1) Deworm today 2) Deworm again in 3 days 3) Deworm again in 2 weeks But technically and most of the time you can get away with just doing #'s 1, and 3. Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco! Poor Goose. Sounds like Goose may be having a bad reaciton to this particular dewormer or maybe even had the wrong dosage. Check your dosage, and if it was correct I would consider contacting your vet for an alternative dewormer (ie Pyrantel palmoate). Pyrantel palmoate dewormer is typically more tolerable and only treats for 2 worms, instead of the 7 way dewormer that you claim to have. I would also suggest feeding her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help settle her stomach and bulk up her stools. And yes worms can be transmitted to other pets via the poop. So clean up all he feces and disinfect the floor with diluted bleach if Goose has an accident in the home. If your adult dog is on a monthly heartworm preventative then this has an intestinal dewormer in it as well that should take care of both these worms.

Hi, I have recently noticed worms in my puppy's stool. I have gotten an appointment with the vet, but what measures do I need to take for our other dog who has been exposed to the puppy?
Most intestinal parasites in dogs are transmitted by fecal-oral transmission. This means that your other dog would have to ingest infected stool from Lenny. I would recommend making sure you are picking up Lenny's stool in the yard and making sure you are washing your hands afterwards. There are a few intestinal parasites that can be transmitted to people so good hygiene, like hand washing, is important. You can always ask your vet to deworm your other dog when they are deworming Lenny just as precaution. If your other dog is already on monthly heart worm prevention (which is important for both dogs' overall health) you may already be covered as many of the heart worm preventions are also dewormers and treat common intestinal parasites. I would talk to your vet about heart worm prevention for Lenny and your other dog if they are not already on it. We generally start puppies on heart worm prevention monthly when they come in for their first set of vaccines.

While it is still possible that your puppy could also acquire hookworms and tapeworms, it is unlikely since he has been at the vet regularly with (I assume) regular deworming treatments. Tapeworms are transmitted by ingestion of either infected fleas or rodents, so be sure that both dogs are receiving a high quality flea prevention regularly. Clean up after each bowel movement and practice good hand hygiene to try to decrease the risk of transmission. It may be worth giving your vet a call to double check that your puppy has been dewormed with a medication that treats both tapeworms and hookworms (such as Drontal Plus) recently, but again, it is unlikely that the puppy will have an issue.
