My puppy's surgery suture disappeared. Will the incision open?

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 29 days old | 10 lbs

my puppy 8 months old had crypthoid surgery four days ago, the doctor used surgical sutures to close the incision, the incision is closed, it looks like a scar, but this morning I was able to see the suture, in the evening the thread disappeared, I can not see it although the incision is closed. may be the puppy licked it off, I am afraid it is going to open. the dr. said she is going to take the thread off next Friday, these are the sutures that usually dissolve on their own in 60 days.

If the incision is still closed, I'd just keep an eye on it, checking it two to three times a days. Should the incision open, then I would worry and have him seen by a vet right away to get it closed again. I hope this helps.

Sometimes skin incisions that were closed with glue will pucker at the very ends and open slightly. However, the middle pucker appears a little swollen. I would recommend that you take Chloe to a vet to check the incision. Usually the vet that performed the surgery will do brief incision checks at no charge. Sometimes another spot of glue is all that is needed to get it to heal properly. Sometimes the puckers are left open to heal on their own. If the vet finds signs of infection, oral antibiotics can be prescribed. Make sure that Chloe is not licking the incision. If you see her lick even once she needs to wear an e-collar or cone to prevent further opening of the incision. Also, she needs to still be on moderate activity restriction - even though this can be difficult in young puppies, encourage her to stay flat and not jump around too much. And no bathing for at least 1 week after surgery.

I would not worry about this incision. If the opening is no bigger than what I see on the photo, it will likely just crust over and heal by itself. There is no infection visible (not red, no pus) so antibiotics are not needed. You will need to tighten the cone a bit more, so he cannot take it off again. You may also put a t-shirt on him so he cannot reach his incision. He must not lick it. If the incision still looks like this on Monday, ie, not worse, then you do not need to take him to the vet.

I recommend taking her back to your veterinarian for a post-surgical suture check. Your vet can determine if it is safe to leave the [incision](https://www.petcoach.co/article/incisions-and-healing-in-animals) open or if it will need to be reclosed. Your veterinarian may also prescribe antibiotics (if your dog is not already taking them) to prevent infection. If your dog is opening up the incision by licking or biting at the sutures, your vet may also send her home with an e-collar (cone).

Chili had her surgery 9 days ago and we noticed its open now. She's an overactive mini pin so keeping her calm has been difficult. Does this need to be closed up by the vet or just leave it alone to heal?
it is hard to say if this can heal without putting another stitch in. If you cannot keep your dog still, then this will indeed need another stitch or staple to hold the wound edges together and especially not enlarge. It is also very important to keep an e-collar on her so she cannot lick the incision. Keeping her calm would be essential and you may have to crate her in order to achieve that.

A photo of the incision would help greatly in assessing the problem. If the incision looks opened you need to 1) keep your dog from licking it as she will open it even more. Best put on an e-collar. 2) take her to a veterinarian to have it resutured.

My puppy was spayed just over a week ago. She's in a cone but I noticed today her stitches were gone. I don't know if they resolved or if she has opened her incision. :(
It is quite possible that she did not have any external stitches. Did you see any there at any point? Most routine spay surgeries with relatively small incisions are closed with layers of stitches under the surface and only skin glue at the skin edges. This does not look to me like there were ever skin stitches there to begin with as there are no marks that would have been left from the suture material. This incision is not open.

My puppy riped out his stitches its his 9th day i was suppost to take him to get them out tomorrow he ripped of his scab and stitches there is a whole i dont no what to is it ok do i need to bandage him?
Since there is a hole in Jaxx's incision it will probably need to be stitched closed again so it heals properly and decreases the chance of infection. If you have an E-collar at home I would keep that on him to prevent him from licking the incision more and preventing more trauma. Also, depending where the incision is you could place a light bandage over it to prevent him from licking. Just be sure not to put too much pressure on the incision with the bandage because that could do more harm than good. Definitely keep you appointment at the vet tomorrow so they can check him out.

Hello, thank you for your question about Roofus. Depending on the location of the hole in regards to the rest of his stitches I would be concerned that his incision may not heal properly. Since his surgery was so recent and there has been very limited time for any healing so far it is possible that Roofus could develop a build of of fluid (seroma) or blood (hematoma) which could prevent healing of his full incision. It is also possible that he could develop a surgical site infection due to this opening, although this is less likely since he is on antibiotics. I would recommend having Roofus evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can examine the surgical incision and determine the need for additional closure. If this opening is at the bottom of the incision they may elect to allow this to act as a drainage site and perform no further closure. However, if the hole is at the top or middle portion of the incision they may elect to place an additional stitch or staple to close the

My pet did not like the e collar and he licks himself but it doesn’t seem like he has an infection, it’s a bit red but I think his sutures opened should I take him for a check up?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! From the photo, it looks like Milo has sutures under the skin, which you cannot see. There does seem to be a mild amount of swelling and redness of the incision, and a very slightly opened area. Swelling and redness, especially if accompanied by discharge, are signs of infection. Milo should definitely be wearing his E-collar at all times. Licking and chewing can cause the sutures to loosen and the incision to open. You can apply a warm compress the the area several times a day to reduce swelling and promote healing. If you notice that incision opens more, there is any bleeding or discharge, or the area feels hot to the touch, Milo should be seen by his vet as soon as possible. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It does look like the skin layer of the skin has opened. It will close on its own but I recommend having the vet look at it to make sure it doesn’t appear infected. If so, she will require antibiotics. I do not recommend removing sutures without having a vet look at the incision because sometimes they need to stay in longer. Good luck and kisses to Zoe!
