My puppy is vomiting after car ride. Any OTC meds for his stomach?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 14 days old | 25 lbs

My 6 month old labradoodle became car sick and has continued to vomit off and on since we got home (7 hours ago). I believe it is directly related to becoming car sick, and we are not aware that he has eaten anything he should not have. Are there any OTC medications I can give him to settle his stomach?

Poor Huck! It could be he's vomiting for being car sick but it could also be he has a stomach illness. Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give him to settle his stomach, but I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Poor Capone! This vomiting could be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis among other causes. I would be worried in that it's not normal for a dog to vomit. If he has stopped vomiting, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps and thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your concerns about Capone.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If he does not seem lethargic, I would withhold food for 6 hours and then initiate a bland diet as outlined below. If Bernie become lethargic, continues to vomit or develops diarrhea I would strongly recommend that you have a veterinarian examine him to help better determine what the cause could be. I would want to make sure he does not have a foreign body intestinal obstruction from something he ate, parvo virus, etc. Testing such as a parvo test and abdominal x-rays can help rule these out. He may just have a dietary indiscretion from something he ate or a new food / treat you gave him as well. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be happy to help you out further.

Poor pups. Feed them both a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in their normal diet. If one of them refuses to eat the bland diet, one of them vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, that dog will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!
