Why is my dog leaking clear liquid from his penis after waking up?

it's only happened a couple times but my dog has waken up out of his sleep got up turning circles like hes trying to get comfortable and then a clear liquid starts coming out of his penis. why is this?

This can be completely normal. Nipsey may be getting up trying to get comfortable, and some smegma has come out as he's moving around. It doesn't sound like this is anything to worry about, and you don't need to do anything about it. I hope this helps.

Ejaculate containing sperm should look opaque white, so I don't think it sounds like sperm. It could be very dilute urine that appeared clear, or it may be saliva if he was licking his penis and prepuce. If he is urinating normally and seems to be acting like his usual self I would not be concerned. You should monitor for any wet areas on his bedding or other discharge from his penis and contact your veterinarian if you see these signs.

A picture of the amount you saw would help here so we can quantify the amount. However only small amounts should be coming out (not puddles of fluid) and usually it is yellowish/green in color if it is smegma (hormonal fluid from male dogs). If it was colorless and odorless it may have been really dilute urine. Nevertheless it isn’t something to be too terribly concerned about, unless it is a large puddle and constantly leaks. If this was a one time incident I also wouldn’t worry. I hope that this was something incidental and doesn’t continue to be a problem for Sam. If it does then a vet visit is needed to collect samples of this mysterious fluid so that I can be analyzed and confirmed what exactly it is. Best wishes with him moving forward. Take care!

No one knows if dogs have "wet dreams" per se, however, it is not uncommon for dogs to ejaculate even when they sleep. I would not be worried about this behavior. The best way to fix this is to have them neutered before they start displaying other sexual behaviors.

Unneutered male dogs will masturbate and have discharge from the penis on occasion. This is normal as long as his penis does not stay exposed from it's sheath for longer than an hour or so. If it stays out too long it is an emergency and he needs to see a vet. If you do not like this behavior you can have him neutered which will probably help.

This may be smegma. It's a discharge that actually comes from the penile sheath, and is normal. If Mango is acting normally, no need to rush him into a hospital now. Keep an eye on him tonight, and if the discharge keeps happening, have him seen by a vet.

My 2 year old black lab has discharge appearing at the tip of his penis/sheath. Eating & playing is great, no trouble urinating. Can I attempt to clear this up myself with home remedy? Will have to try and get a photo when it appears on the sheath.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! You may be referring to smegma which does not need to be treated necessarily. If that is the case, it should just be a tiny amount at the tip. If it is more than that or just dripping it may be an infection in which case a visit to a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment would be indicated. Best of luck!

This is normal. As long as he’s urinating normally, acting normal, eating and drinking, no vomiting or diarrhea, there is no reason for concern. The amount will increase some as he gets older, then decrease following surgery to neuter him. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Hello, my 5 yo neutered American Bulldog has a white creamy (puss) looking discharge at the tip of his penis. Is there a basic home remedy you can recommend as I can't really afford a Vet if it can be avoided. THANK YOU!
It is quite possible that the discharge you are seeing is smegma. This is a normal occurrence in dogs. It does have more frequently in dogs that have not yet been neutered, but can occur in any male dog. I would just wipe it with a clean towel. If it keeps coming back, if the penis becomes discolored, if Bailey seems painful, or if he has trouble urinating, this could indicate infection and Bailey would need to be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

That is likely "smegma", a normal discharge in intact males. You can have your veterinarian exam him for confirmation. Monitor for excessive discharge or licking or for bloody discharge or difficulty urinating.

Yes, this could be a normal discharge called smegma. It is more common in intact males. As long as there is no difficulty urinating, frequent urination, increased thirst, bloody urine or lethargy, then there is likely no cause for concern.
