My puppy has roundworms. Is a vet visit necessary or can I use OTC?

I have a new 8 week old husky. She been with us for two days and today there were roundworms in her feces. I owned many dogs before never any issues with worms and this is my first in-home pet. Do I need to take her to the vet or can this be treated with over the counter meds?

Roundworms are very common in puppies! From the picture, she definitely has them! While there are OTC medications that are good (Bayer is about the only one I would recommend), the best dewormers are from the vet. Truly, you get what you pay for in terms of dewormers, flea treatment, etc. You also just got Snowflake, and she should see a vet anyway to get vaccines done and while there, the vet can give her a deworming treatment. In this case, I recommend seeing the vet. I hope this helps!

I would recommend a trip to the veterinarian to young Maisey. The vet will be able to identify exactly what types of wom infestation she has using a fecal sample. Then the appropriate wormer can be prescribed. Best of luck to you both.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Not sure what type of worm you saw without a picture of it. Small, whitish worms that resemble grains of white rice are tapeworms and longer worms would probably be roundworms, hookworms, or other types of worms. Tapeworms are treated with a drug called praziquantal which is available over the counter. The most common tapeworm is caused by fleas and that medicine will treat it. Follow the instructions on the product. You also want to make sure that you are using an effective flea/tick medicine recommended by your veterinarian. Round, hook, and whipworms are treated with various dewormers. You want to use something that will kill all of them. I would advise getting fenbendazole (Safeguard) and following the directions. Mix the powder with food for 3 days. If the problem still exists, contact your vet for further instruction. Good luck

Luna just pooped out a bunch of worms. She is a little over 2 lbs. and has her first vet visit Monday, however the vet is not open over the weekend. I bought some OTC dewormer for puppies/dogs this size Bayer Quad Dewormer. I’ll f I give her this
No, it won't mess up the visit. Let your veterinarian know you dewormed her today. Bring the package with you so he or she knows what was given. The deworming will likely need to be repeated at 2 week intervals over the next 8 weeks.

I found worms in my dogs poop last night 3 of them skinny white ones I use the Vital wet dog food and some times my dog dosnt eat it right away and I'm not here to put it back in the fridge could that be why and can i just come in and get some meds f
Those look like they are probably roundworms. She would have gotten them from coming into contact with infective eggs in the soil most likely. (From where another dog pooped and that poop contained roundworm eggs, then your dog was nosing around near where that was (even if there was no obvious poop on the ground, the eggs will stay in the soil). It is not a result of the food. You can get effective roundworm treatment over the counter. Look for a pyrantel product and follow the label instructions. Feed stores will generally carry it. Great question! I would get Ginger an OTC treatment now. You can give her Panacur, it's an excellent dewormer that kills roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It's a three day course of treatment and you will need to give her a second round of it two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. She should then be dewormed monthly until six months of age, and then every three months thereafter. I hope this helps :-)

Little white worms should not be in your puppy's stool and it appears that the breeder did not do his job worming the puppies, All puppies have worms, but this should be treated, You can buy a puppy wormer over the counter in a petshop (make suree it specifies "puppy wormer" and it is the right one for your puppy's weight. Give this to your puppy and again 2-3 weeks later. Make sure you take your puppy to a vet soon for a puppy exam and first vaccinations.

You can't visually tell the difference between hookworms and roundworms. Thankfully, treatment is similar. You can use an OTC dewormer like the one linked below. Looks like roundworms. There are many OTC dewormers that should work just fine. You can look for one that contains Pyrantel. It is still a good idea to have a vet diagnose what worms or other intestinal parasites are present. And Cujo will need re-treatment in 3 weeks to kill adults that hatch from eggs in the intestines right now. Typically, the only type of worms that can be seen in a dog's feces are roundworms and tapeworms. Medications that kill tapeworms are available only from the vet, and do require a visit. While there are OTC deworming treatments, they don't kill tapeworms, so you could be treating Chato but not killing the worms in his system. I would recommend taking him into the vet for an exam. He should get Drontal, which kills the four types of worms that infect dogs: Tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. These are roundworms. They are a common parasite for puppies to acquire at birth and don't tend to cause any major problems. They are easily treatable with deworming medication that can be purchased at a pet store, or a veterinary office. I recommend having a vet prescribe the medication to ensure it's safe for Oreo and proper instructions are given. I hope that helps and all is well with Oreo.
