Why is my dog sick with diarrhea and not eating after eating dry food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 22 lbs

My dog was on raw diet (steak) and doing great. Went to friends house and he snuck dry dog food, alot. Few hours later he vomited and had regular diarrhea. After that he would only eat a little food (steak) and drink water. Fast forward 2 days and now he only drinks water, has yellow mucusy diarrhea that he strains to poop out. He still drinks but acts like he is hungry but when shown food he turns and goes away. No sores in mouth and he acts ok. But he is pooping every 5 min

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
