Puppy diarrhea getting worse after new food. What can I feed him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 month and 18 days old | 60 lbs

My 6 week old puppy has had diarrhea and I tried giving him pumpkin purée just a little and it didn’t help. We just got him last week and have transitioned to a new food so I mixed it to try to help the transition but it’s getting worse. He’s 6 weeks old, Gerberian Shepsky. Seems to be eating and drinking fine & plays still.

Poor Koa. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

I would get him dewormed as puppies often have intestinal parasites as a cause of their diarrhea. You can find these at your local pet store. You can also feed him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days to see if this helps. Adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food can help harden his stool as well. If things don't improve within 2-4 days or get worse then its best to get him seen by your vet. Best wishes and take care.

Hi, and thanks for your question. As a first approach, I would suggest to tart feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed.
