My parakeet has a bleeding eye injury and it's closed. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, I have a parakeet that has obtained some sort of an eye injury a few days ago. One of his eyes is closed and there is some blood surrounding his eye on his feathers. I've tried to treat this injury with a homemade saline solution using only lukewarm water and sea salt. I wanted to take my bird to the vet, but unfortunately, I have a sore throat and I'm concerned about the virus. I've decided to stay home for the sake of safety and instead, figure out what to do. Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out. Blood from the eye is concerning and a veterinary visit is highly recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Corneal scratches can be painful and get infected. Could a family member or friend take him to the vet for you. Monitor food and water intake. Good luck.
