Dog has brown discharge after spay & bath. Is it serious?

Hello my newly rescued pitbull just got fixed four or five days ago. She’s 7 years old and just had a litter. The owner said they didn’t even ween off the puppies. Additionally my roommate gave her a bath yesterday. The owner had told me the vet didn’t say anything about her not being able to get a bath. The problem is that this morning she has a brownish discharge coming from her lady area. Is it a period? Is it cuz of her recent birth? Or was she not supposed to get a bath thst soon after fix

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Stormi. No, she should not have gotten a bath at all. She should not be bathed until the stitches are removed. And no, she will not be able to go into heat at all now given that she is spayed. This discharge could be a sign of a problem, so please take her into a vet right away to get her checked out. Best of luck.

I would not be concerned about this change in discharge. Usually a brownish discharge indicates old blood/bleeding. If she is otherwise acting normal just continue giving her the medication as prescribed and keep your recheck appointment for Monday.

It doesn't require an emergency visit but it isn't normal either that long after a spay, it's probably an infection and it will need to be treated with an antibiotic course, you should try and make an apointment with your vet in the next couple days if possible.

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. She should not have a discharge a week after the spay, however sometimes thisx can happen. This could also be a sign of an infection, or a sign of a UTI. I would take her to your veterinarian for an exam, just in case.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. It is unfortunately very difficult for me to tell based on this one photo if this is normal or abnormal. I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. It would be abnormal for a spayed female dog to have vaginal discharge. If there is discharge, it either means there could be a stump pyometra or some type of urinary issue as both the reproductive and urinary systems empty into the same area. If the skin around the vulva is discolored this can often be normal but can also indicate a skin infection. It is best if you have a vet examine her in person. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is probably ok for now though it does indicate that there was some discharge and potentially an infection. I would recommend that you keep a very close eye on the incision site. If you notice any active discharge (moist instead of dry), bleeding or pain, have her evaluated as soon as possible to make sure it is not an active infection. Keep the area clean for now. If no more discharge is noted, it is possible that it will heal completely on its own. Good luck and have a nice day!

A little bit of discharge is normal but continue to monitor the incision and if the discharge persists or gets worse then she should be examined by a vet. She may need an antibiotic to treat an infection. Also monitor for redness and/or swelling. Make sure she is not licking the incision as this will inhibit healing.

This can sometimes occur 7-10 days after surgery as the suture starts to break down where it was tied near the cervix. As long as Riley feels good, and has a normal appetite, I would not be concerned. If the discharge hasn't cleared up in a day or two, you should have her checked out by your vet.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Harley! No, it is not normal to have green discharge from the vulva after being spayed. She could have a uterine stump infection (the part of the uterus that is left), a urinary tract infection or a vaginitis. Harley should be seen by the Vet that did the surgery today before the weekend. They will likely put her on antibiotics to see if that takes care of it. Good luck!

Based on your description, I am concerned that she has a uterine infection known as a pyometra. If so, she will most likely need an emergency surgery to spay her. I hope this information helps!
