Why is my fish tipping over and acting strange after tank cleaning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Freshwater Fish

Hi my fish has just now been acting very strange. He seems to keep tipping over on his side so I think he’s not doing well. I just treated joker fish last week that died of fin and tail rot and used fungus Guard but that wasn’t supposed to hurt other fish in the tank. I just did a water change today and the ph and ammonia is fine in the tank. He has no signs of any fish rot if anything he’s a bit faded. I used some things in the tank cleaning like stress enzyme, accu-clear, ammo lock.

From your description, I think swim bladder disease is possible. There is a really thorough article that I will link below. When you check water parameters, it is important to make sure you also check nitrites and nitrates. Ideally, ammonia and nitrites should be zero and nitrates should be equal to or less than less than 40. If nitrates are zero, it indicates that your tank is not quite nitrogen cycled. If it is higher than 40, then you need to do at least a 50% water change. https://www.thesprucepets.com/swim-bladder-disorder-in-aquarium-fish-1381230
