My dog's wrist is swollen and I gave aspirin. Is it an emergency?

My dog think has a broken wrist, an I gave her an asprin 1 a day so far for 3 days. the vet told me a half aday ,but her wrist id getting bigger ,an Im scared

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Endora. If you think her wrist is broken, she has to see a vet immediately. She may need surgery to fix it, and it's very concerning the area is getting bigger. This can no longer be treated at home, please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. When dogs are 'non-ambulatory'- not walking on a leg, this is usually a sign of significant pain. Also, swelling is concerning for either a significant injury (fracture/dislocation), an infection or abscess (pocket of pus), or in older animals we worry about cancers. I would recommend having Swayde seen by a vet to see if anything serious is going on, and would recommend x-rays. Best of luck with Swayde.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. I would still keep the appointment you have with the veterinarian. In the meantime, you could start a pain medication to help her out. I would recommend Well & Good Buffered Aspirin. You can find this product at PetCo and it is specifically for dogs. Follow the dosing on the bottle as directed. The veterinarian will likely give you a different medication that is safer to use long term. I hope this helps! I would definitely get x-rays of the leg tomorrow to look into this further and rule out any bone fractures.

I have a concern my puppy dog left leg is swollen and he won't walk on it and he's in a lot of pain. I don't know what I should do to help him right now until I can get the money to take him to the vet

For pain relief, you can use Well & Good Buffered Aspirin, which you can find online or at your local Petco quite easily. I would also consider looking into CareCredit to see if you are able to apply for a line of credit to address any medical problems for Chino. I hope this helps! Can my dog have aspirin for a possibly sprained ankle until I can take her to the vet? We iced it and she's still limping.
Poor Wednesday! Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe any medication without examining Wednesday myself. I do not recommend giving her aspirin, as it may have some unwanted side effects in dogs such as damage to the kidneys, gastric ulcers, and bleeding issues when given in high doses. She should definitely be seen by a vet as soon as possible, especially because she is limping. Your vet can take x-rays to see where the trauma is, and perform blood work to make sure that Wednesday's organs are functioning properly to handle any pain medication, as well as place a cast or splint if necessary. You should try to keep her as calm and quiet, with as little activity as possible until she is examined by a vet. Good luck and I hope Wednesday feels better soon!

My dogs leg is swollen around the knee joint on her back left leg. The front looks the most inflamed but it’s all the way down her paw. She isn’t reacting to me touching it at all but wouldn’t jump up onto the bed and is clearly uncomfortable.
Wow, Demi's leg is quite swollen in the pictures! She could have broken a bone, torn a ligament or muscle, or have a severe infection in the leg. Based on the amount of swelling, this is an emergency and she needs to see a vet now. please take her into one immediately to get this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

Hi my dog has been licking her leg for two days and know it is swollen and she can't put pressure on it
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Pandora and for providing pictures of her paw. They are very helpful. I certainly see swelling in the pictures, especially of one of her toes. It may be infected or broken. If she can't put pressure on her leg, that means she is in a lot of pain. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet immediately. The vet will likely want to do x-rays of her paw to see what is going on, and can give her pain medication. I hope this helps!

My lab mix is favoring his left front leg, and has issues with stairs. I can manipulate it, and the leg as well. There is no swelling and does not feel warm. I suspect an ankle sprain, and have given him a low dose aspirin. What else can I do for him
I would not recommend continuing with the aspirin, it can be dangerous for dogs. a bandage is probably not the solution either. if it is just a sprain then he should get better within a few days of complete rest (no stairs, no jumping and very short walks). if the problem persists then this is probably arthritis which is very common in large breeds. if this is the case you will have to take him to the vet in order to get treated as he will need dog specific medications for this condition.

Waiting until the morning would mean that she is in a lot of pain until then. If you get her seen right now, she can receive appropriate pain medication to help relieve this discomfort. This may be a fractured bone and not having any pain medications until the morning would mean that she is in extreme discomfort until then. Hello, sorry to hear about Royalty. It is actually. difficult to know if he has any fractures without an x-ray of the foot and wrist. However, signs of a fracture will include non-weight bearing lameness on that leg, pain, persistent swelling, and severe bruising. If he is walking on the leg comfortably, it would be less likely that he has a fracture. But if you think he is having the above mentioned sings, the recommended next step is to have his veterinarian seen him so that he can have an x-ray. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Is a swollen ear an emergency? Could I give my dog an aspirin for comfort until my vet is available on Monday?
Poor Cooper! I'm sorry to hear that he has a swollen ear. As long as he is acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) this would not normally be considered an emergency. But if you feel that he's very painful or uncomfortable, you could certainly opt to take him to an emergency clinic for quicker treatment. I would not recommend giving him aspirin, as this can cause severe stomach issues in some dogs. It will also severely limit your veterinarian's treatment options on Monday, as no other anti-inflammatory medications or steroids can be given until the aspirin is completely out of his system (usually 3-5 days). If he is scratching at the ear, you can place an e-collar (plastic cone) on his to keep him from damaging it further until you are able to see the vet.
