My new dog tested positive for distemper. How to protect my other dogs?

Hi, my mixed breed dog whom we just adopted from a shelter was tested negative for parvo and distemper virus. After her vaccination 2 weeks ago, she was tested positive for distemper base from her new doctor using ELISA igm test. Doctor said she could be assymptomatic as shes very active and eating. how can i prevent my other dogs from contracting the virus when they are together?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. As long as your other dogs are fully vaccinated against distemper, they cannot get it. Make sure they are up to date on their distemper vaccines before introducing Manila to them. I hope this helps!

Symptoms occur within a few days to a week of exposure, and include fever, lethargy, nasal discharge, and neurologic signs such as seizures and incoordination. I am so sorry you lost your puppy. If your other dog is fully vaccinated it is unlikely that they will come down with Distemper. I would monitor Panther for any coughing or upper respiratory symptoms. Distemper can also cause neurologic problems in dogs. Again, I would not worry but always monitor your other dog since vaccinations are never 100% effective. Thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Hi My adopted dog tested negative for distemper last May 28. She had her first 5in1 vaccines last July 8. Then After 2 weeks, she was tested again (needed before surgery) and it came out positive for distemper, exact result = S3 using ELISA Igm test.
Since dogs can shed the virus for 4-5 weeks, I would wait at least a month from the first test before taking Manila around other dogs. As for the positive test result, your vet can call the lab and/or the vaccine manufacturer to ask about that particular vaccine reacting with the test to cause a false positive.

I'm sorry your mother's dog may have distemper! If your dogs are fully vaccinated against distemper, then there is no worries that they will get it. Distemper is most commonly spread through airborne exposure (coughing and sneezing), as well as direct contact with the infected dog. It can also be transmitted by shared food and water bowls and equipment. As long as your dogs have no contact with your mother's dog, you do not share bowels, blankets, and toys, and you practice good hygiene after seeing your mother's dog, your dogs should be fine. Distemper is very nasty and sometimes dogs can get it even though they were vaccinated, if the immune system did not respond properly. The fact that they are all showing signs of distemper is very strange if they were all vaccinated. Fully vaccinated= at least three courses of vaccines as a puppy and then boosters after one year. then every three years. If you vaccinated them yourself, there is a chance that the vaccine, if bought from a store and/or if it got warm, lost its effectivity. You will need to take all your dogs to your veterinarian for an exam and a blood test that verifies that this is indeed distemper.

I am so sorry for your loss. There is a risk for bringing in another puppy so soon after distemper was in your place. Good news is that distemper isn’t a very sturdy virus without a “host” so if you thoroughly cleaned, Rancho will likely be okay but no guarantee. I would throw away any bedding or toys the other dog used. I would also keep a really close eye on your new dog for any symptoms that are concerning. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question. It should be fine to visit. I would change your clothes as soon as you come home and could even shower before interacting with your own dogs. Being adult dogs and fully vaccinated their risk would be minimal. I certainly would not take your dogs to your dogs to your friend's house though. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. Puppies are typically vaccinated for the distemper virus. However, some are never taken to a veterinarian. So I would certainly recommend having Charlie vaccinated now. He would need an initial vaccine and then a booster in 3-4 weeks. This will ensure that he is adequately protected. Hi there. In general, the vaccine for distemper is very effective - so it would be surprising for the foster dog to develop it a month after being vaccinated, and even more unlikely for your healthy, vaccinated dogs to catch it from her on the off-chance that it *is* distemper. Kennel cough would be much more likely. So try not to worry too much, for now! I would definitely change and clean the water bowl, and keep the foster separated from your own dogs until she's back to normal. And monitor your pups for any symptoms, so they can get started on treatment if needed.

Unfortunately, it takes up to 2 weeks for a vaccination to be effective, so vaccinating the exposed puppies after exposure, will not help protect them from their previous exposure, but may help protect them against future exposure. You can call your local VetCo clinic to determine if they are able to accommodate the puppies in a safe manner, so that other dogs are not exposed.
