Why does my dog vomit whole food right after eating and try to eat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 43 lbs

I just got done feeding my dog he ate all the food in about less than 5minutes, he then goes straight outside afterwards and immediately throws up everything in two piles. The food was still whole pieces as well I noticed. But he then goes and tries to eat both piles until I stopped him. Is this normal ? What should I do ?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Some dogs want to eat what they just vomited, it is normal behaviour. Please, do not offer him anything to eat or drink for the next 2-3 hrs. Then try with a small portion of his regular food and see if he keeps it down. If he does, you can offer him more food in 1-2 hrs time. However, if he keeps vomiting you should get him checked over by your local vets.
